Hair and lotion

Baths are definitely a must.  Doctors once thought it was drying to the skin but, have now found that it's best.  Good luck.  My son had it on his head and all over his body.  We've been fine for months now but, it's so disappointing while you're going through it.

Can you go to a children's dermatologist? I did for my son and they gave me special shampoo and ointment for his head. It's alot better than trying the store bought crap that doesn't really work that well.

I use Johnsons Baby Moisturizer. Its in a tall pink tube instead of a bottle right next to the baby lotions. I tried tons of things first and this has worked best for me. I havent seen any signs of dry flaky skin since I started using it on my littl girl.

Thanks for the help. We have a medicated lotion we use. She has a dermatologist appointment this wednesday. I think I will ask if there is another shampoo or lotion to use. Hopefully we will find a solution. I will try the baby powder the next time we have to put it on. The lotion she is on is elidel a non steroid and cutivate a steroid. They both work but I like using the non steriod better. No worries of thinning skin and if its not too bad it works.

Try selsum blue shampoo or head and shoulders a couple times a week. Or see if the doctor will write a prescription for a medicated shampoo.

I have the same problem and I am 31 years old--i've had it all my life and it seems to never go away in the winter. the best thing to do is to put a ton of baby oil on just the spot in the bathtub or near the sink. let it sit there and massage for a while. then get the aveeno shampoo or soap for excema and just wash the hair not the scalp. remember to not scrub the area with anything--massage with finger tips not nails. add a tiny bit of oil to just the spot everyday and wipe the hair with a baby wipe to get the access oil out of the hair not the scalp.

my third daughter had pretty bad eczema - all over, poor thing. We went to a naturopath (who didn't take her offf every food known to Man), who recommended Bifidus culture. There have been some studies done that show that for many (not all) children, it can be very effective in clearing up their eczema. A naturopath should be able to get hold of the raw product & advise a dosage schedule, otherwise, if she seems fine with dairy products, a good quality yoghurt that contains the Bifidus culture may well do the trick. My daughter went from covered to mostly 'cured' in under a month - the transformation was amazing & right through her toddler years, she would 'self-medicate' in that as her skin started to get a bit dry, she would ask for yoghurt several times a day for the next few days. We have not seen another major outbreak since. She is now 5 1/2



I am still always careful about what products I put on her skin & wash her clothes with, but as I have 'sensitive' skin, and so do my 3 other daughters, I don't have to do anything extra that I don't do for the rest.

My 5 month old son suffers from cradle cap and I was told to use olive oil to take the excess skin off but it would always come back. Creams didn't work and then my pediatric nurse told me to buy a special shampoo, SOROPON. I got rid of the excess skin with the oil & fine comb and started using the shampoo every two days. I only started it this week but so far so good. I hope it gets rid of the problem. It's a bit pricey but I had to try it because he kept scratching to the point of bleeding. Try the shampoo, the hair gets soft and the scalp is less scaley.

Do you live in an area that the weather has cooled off enough for her to wear a little cap?
I know it's recommended that if you have dry hands, put lotion on and then wear cotton gloves to bed. You might get the lotion to soak in better with the cap and it'll hide the greasy looking hair.

I know in the summer time my sons head gets sun burnt pretty easily and so I found using the spray on lotion helped. Is there any spray on med. you can use for it?

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but you could put baby powder to absorb the greasy - ness on her hair.

Put a small amount of baby powder in your hands, rub it around, and then apply to the baby's hair. It helps to soak up some of the oil so it looks less greasy.

My son also has eczema. His head used to be flaky when he was younger. I got the cradle cap care stuff & it may have helped a little, but not much (even tho i knew it wasn't cradle cap). The doctor told me to wash his hair with T-Gel. You can get it from WalMart in the shampoo section. You just have to be extra careful not to get it in their eyes, as it's not tear free! Good luck!

Hi Angie, my husband had this problem and someone recommended a tui oil from Carol's Daughther, their products are very natural, I would think a bit of the oil might help the scalp. When my son was a baby he had the same problem and all I did was baby oil and used a very soft brush and the flakes came off. Good Luck.

My second child had excema/psoriasis. She is now 11 and there is no sign of it anymore. I think they can grow out of it. She was beautiful when she was born and then a bout two weeks later she was covered with itchy scales. I did some research and I took her to a dermatoligist and had it diagnosed and he told me the usual about hydrocortisone cream and not washing all the time, etc. I really like the natural way of doing things so I started putting liquid lecithin, evening primrose oil drops in her bottle as well as applying the evening primrose oil to her skin and I found a jar of salve at GNC to apply to her as well. Calendula oil is also the greatest thing to apply to any skin problem. The final thing we did when she was a few months old we took a trip to VA Beach and I sat on the sand and held her head while the salt water washed over her {keep away from water, right?}. Shortly after that it was GONE!

My kids and I all have excema. The only thing that works for us is making sure we have enough oils in our diet. The one that works the best is hemp oil, and we use it directly on the spots.It will make her hair a little greasy but works. All other lotions and creams just made it worse for us and made it so itchy it was unbearable.Hemp oil is very safe and no matter how young she is can take it.

hi my daughter had really bad excema when she was born i used qv intensive to wash her in i also washed her hair in it also never made her hair greasy. there also natural shampoo's with out soap in them available at the chemist. my daughter is now three and excema free. hope this helps

At one time in my life I had excema all over my body including in my hair. I ended up in the hospital for two weeks cause my doctor here could not get it under control. The dermatologis that I was referred to perscribed diprosone ointment, it must be ointment and not cream. It did make my hair greasy but I only had to use it for a short time and it cleared right up. Good luck Angie, I know first hand how devastating it can be. My heart goes out to you and your little one.

Hi...my daughter had cradle cap, but also has excema on her body. I recommend a tea tree oil wash. I really liked Aleva, found at Wal-Mart, Superstore, any other drug store. Also, try a rinse with a baking soda solution. I've poured some baking soda in my daughter's bath, and it really helps. Look into Spectro products for Excema Kids.

Hi Angie,
My children are prone to getting excema. My girls have had it badly enough that we have gone to the dermatologist for it. They have recommended using Cetaphil soaps, lotions and creams. They also said unless they were dirty, most children don't need soap and that cleaning with water is enough. After the bath though, it is very important to put on a lotion or cream to keep the moisture in...we have found the Cetaphil cream to work the best for them, it's much thicker and they heal faster. We have begun using bath products that do not contain SLS, as I have read that SLS can dry out their skin. We are using Nature Clean products (Candian) and we have not had a major flair up of excema since spring. Nature Clean makes shampoo and conditioner, as well as liquid soap, body washes, laundry detergent and more. Our dermatologist also recommended cutting down on bathes...we were bathing them 3 times a week...now we bath them twice...unless of course they really need it.
I don't know what lotion you could use on her head that would make it look better, but hopefully one of the posts helps you find a way to stop the excema and not have to use the lotion anymore.

Hi Angie. My son has moderate eczema as well. I took him to his dr because of his scalp. He needed an additional ointment to treat the scalp that was different than what we used on his arms and legs. It does make his hair a little greasy, but with nightly baths and a moisturizing shampoo, it hasn't gotten worse. Good luck!

All 4 of my kids and I all have excema, try leaving in a little conditioner in her hair when you wash it and you can even put some on dry hair, not only does it help excema it doesn't look greay and when her hair starts to get long it makes it easier to comb out.

Yo umay be using the steroind creams and yes they can be a bit greasy. There is a foam called Verdoso.

My great-grandfather told my sister to take her son into the ocean. She finally did when he was around 4 and it seems that his skin cleared up quite a bit. It wasn't noticable anymore.

i use vanicream with my son who has excema.. i also wash his head with it, its a bar soap and they have lotion that you can buy at walgreens

Maybe try a tiny bit of baby powder, first mix it in your hands and get rid of the extra and then gently rub it on her scalp until it is gone. It works like a dry shampoo (p.s. works great for fair haired mommies too, when you just can't make it to the shower) ; ) Good luck!

mustella has a great newborn cradle cap shampoo you might want to try but only shampoo 2-3 times a week. you can get the shampoo at buybuy baby or babies r us good luck

My son had cradle cap. Not sure if it's related to exzema, but his pediatrician told us to wash his hair with Head & Shoulders. Walmart sells the travel sized shampoos for $1. The lotion may irritate her itchy scalp. I'm no expert, but I hope that helps.

my friend's son had really bad excema. nothing topical worked so she treated it from the inside out by adding flax seed oil to his diet. it worked like a charm and it is better for you than medicated shampoo. cradle cap-when it is really bad-can also be like excema. for that you can put baby oil or olive oil on her head wait 10 minutes and then using a fine tooth comb brush her hair so the flakes come up. good luck.

For mild cases of eczema, medicated shampoos are recommended. They can be purchased over the counter, and should be used on an ongoing basis, or the eczema will return. The shampoos should be applied on average twice per week. Medicated shampoos for scalp eczema contain selenium sulfide, coal tar, ketoconazole, salicylic acid and zinc pyrithione. If it is a bad flare up and you are using an actual medicated ointment then Scalp applications should be left on for a few hours, then shampooed out. Many creams also contain coal tar. The creams should be used for a few days, then set aside for a week or so. Ointments are used to treat severe scaling. They moisten the scalp and loosen the large flakes or scales. The ointments are sometimes called pomades. Scalp ointments contain natural oils, such as coconut oil and salicylic acid. They should be applied at night and washed off in the morning with a medicated shampoo. My son has had horrible eczema all over his body, and when it is on his scalp alternating a dandruff shampoo with a regular shampoo usual ends the flare.

I would recommend taking her to a naturopath for testing. She may be sensitive to a component of her formula. If you are nursing, it may be something in your diet Is the lotion from the doctor or an over the counter product? It may not be helping the situation. I hope this helps. Good luck.
