I heard about it and the first thing i thought of was post partum psychosis. If she had mental issues before hand then i would think she was more likely to suffer from this. A horrible horrible thing to have happened, the poor wee child. Indeed there is no excuse for it however like said below, why did the medical staff not bring her history to the attention of the right authorities or something? I think all over the world there is lacking help for women post birth. And lacking info and support for what hormones and lack of sleep can do to a woman. I know of a girl, perfectly normal beforehand, who got post natal psychosis several weeks after the birth of her first child, she wouldn't let anyone near it because she believed it was evil and possessed, she was completely paranoid, luckily she got help and was admitted with her baby into care and not long after (with some help, medication and rest) she was back to her normal self. A scary but real thing.

in response to Margaret B's comment...for one: i dont see how anything after the 3rd sentence has anything to do with the original post. second, i must not completely understand your way of thinking...how is it that a disrespectful teenager is worse then a mother KILLING her own son? at least those disrespectful teenagers have a chance at life. and the only way your going to have a teenager that acts that way is by raising them that way. my brother in law and sister in law are a freshman and sophomore in highschool and they are 2 of the most respectful, well behaved kids i know. they have every gadget you could think of from cell phones, i pods, mp3 players, ps3, their own lap tops, computers...but they are being raised to be respectful and well mannered. hell, my husband tried to get his brother (the sophomore) to drink while he was away with us during the weekend, but because of the way my mother in law raised him, he said no. on more then one occasion. they clean their rooms, do their homework and help with chores around the house. they dont choose to be respectful, but are this way because of how they were brought up. yes, ive seen many many teens who are disrespectful and even use to be friends with people like that, but the only reason they are like that is because the parents tolerate it, and let it happen. and in most cases, the parents of those kids are too GD lazy themselves to give a damn about what their kids are doing.

The lady was obviousely sick. Let's keep in mind hat Jesus died for her too. Our World as it use to be will never be the same. After JFK wa shot America has gone into a tail spin. What concerns me today is What parents are doing to their children and teens with all their electronic gadgets. How many teens do you know that stay awake all night on Computer and texting and sleep all day, and have as little as possible interaction with family? Parents just seem to go along with it and allow teens total disrespect, this truly bothers me more than what the sick mom did to her baby.

I am at a loss for words. In the USA there is much harsher punishments for crime so I trust that justice will be done.

She is obviously mentally ill and for her family to know that but still allowed her to be with this baby is confusing to me. I am not in any way blaming anyone except the mother herself.

Just sick and twisted. Ugh!

i dont think that the hospital should be held 100% accountable, i do think that while in the hospital, she or the boyfriend should have brought up her history of a mental disease so proper action couldve been taken for the saftey of this baby. i think that if she was hearing these voices, she should have said something to someone so the baby could have been taken somewhere safe! im not justifying what she did, but by experience, i know how hard it is to admit that you have a mental disability. i was on meds for 2 years for depression, anxiety and ocd. once i got out of the military, i was unable to pay to see a doctor and unable to afford the meds, so i stopped taking them and have convinced myself that i dont need them and that the doctors were wrong. on the other hand, i think anyone would know that if youre hearing the devil talk to you....something is not right. its not a matter of the hospital, or psychiatrists or psychologists....its a matter of picking up the phone, and calling 911 to tell them that you are hearing the devil telling you to kill your baby. if she had done that, i highly believe that a unit would have been sent to her aid and the baby would have been taken away.

This woman is a very, very sick person. But we can't blame the hospital because they probably didn't even know she had a mental disorder. Her family should have been watching her more closely, because they surely knew about it. I can't even stand to think of it -- I have 2 children, and 11 grandchildren and can't even imagine anyone hurting a single one of them.

The sad thing is, she probably feels she is being wronged. My husband works with a young man who was drunk one night and accidentally killed his girlfriend while playing russian roulette with his revolver in his apartment. He was sentenced to a few years in huber. I guess he complains all the time about how some big football player killed his girlfriend and only got 6 months huber and how the food sucks and the matress is too thin, etc. How can people think that what they did is okay and not deserve punishment?

I think the whole family was a bunch of lazy ass slobs. If someone brought you a baby in the middle of the night and said they were hearing voices in their head - would you give the baby back in the next couple of hours?

It's apparent she was already mentally unstable and having a baby just sent her off the deep end. Of course non of us can comprehend how she could do this because we aren't insane, so don't even give yourself a headache thinking about it. There are millions of women who suffer from depression, schizophrenia etc. that take their meds and raise their children just fine. I definitely think the hospital should have been having a visiting nurse go over to check on how she was doing. And come on ladies, do you think her aunt had an inkling she would do THIS? I doubt she would have let her own children around her. Sad situation all around.

i came across one from California. in this case, the boy was 6, and there had been prior reports of abuse and he was seen twice in the hospital for his injuries.

OMG that is so sad! That woman needs to have a total hysterectomy and be locked up in a padded room forever. I'm holding my 4 month old while reading this and couldn't imagine how anything could posess me to harm an infant, especially as heinous as that!

This is terrible. I cant ever imagine anyone doing this to their child. I actually think less of the father and family that left the child with her. If she has a history of these kind of psychiatric problems and had not been able to overcome them then the baby should never have been left in her care for the fact that she would have limited control over her actions.

that is absolutely incomprehensible. I could not imagine the horror of the police when they found the child. Someone should have been able to help this poor innecent child. It said there were other people that lived in the house, how did they not know that something horrible might happen to the baby. This is just beyond words.

if it was in a state like lousiana, i believe the law there is, any murder or rape of a child is automatic death penalty. i wouldnt doubt she will plead insanity, and not have a jury of her peers, becuase without a doubt in my mind at least 75% of them will have children and send her to death. hopefully she is sentenced to life in a mental ward with no possibility of returning to civilization. i was diagnosed with post partum depression just a few weeks after my son was born, and i would hate myself if the thought of killing my son ever crossed my mind. its just tragic.

So I was just reading the article! I can't believe that someone could do this!! To answer one question yes according to this she did eat parts of her baby and to answer another the father had just recently moved out. I personally would like to know how the child's aunt and two other children could be in the house and not try to stop this!! Well not the children as they were only 5 and 7, but the aunt!! Someone had to have heard something... So sad!

That is absolutely the most horrible thing I have ever heard :(
Just the other day near my home town a 7 week old baby dies after being at the iwk in intesive care from her parents beating her. they said that nearly everybone in her body that could be broken was broken and when they had gone into the house to search it (the house being a bording house and the mom, dad and baby all shared a room. there was a matress on the floor the baby slept in and they did not find diapers, baby food, bottles nothing for th elittle girl :( Makes me soo sad that people can actually do that to a baby.....If anyone ever hurt my little boy in any way shape or form, I would be scared of what I would do..
So sad to think the 7 weeks of her life were a living hell :(
atleast she is in a better place now where they cant hurt her :(
