Has anyone experienced kidney dilation in their babies' ultrasound??

When I Was 28 Weeks Pregnant They Told Me My Baby Boy Had An Enlarged Kidney ( Left ) , When He Was Born It Was Still Like That , When He Was 2 Days Ols They Did A ICVUG , Tgey Put A Tube In His Penis & Did An X-Ray To Look At The Kidneys It Was Atill Like :-( , & He Was Takinqq Antibiotics But Today He Had An Appointment With The Neuphrologist & They Told Me To Stop Giving Antibiotics , But He Still Got Fluids In His Left Kidney & Now A Little In His Right One , I'm So scare Pls SomeOne Give Me Advice , My Baby Is Only 1 Months & Is My First & Only Baby

My son is 1 and he was born with a large kid right and it was working at all and he had 3 tudes not 1 and he had to have his right kidney takin out Feb 2010.

Christa,
How did your baby turn out? Did the dilation resolve itself? Did he/she have any other problems?
I am 33 yrs old and 20 wks pregnant. I just had an ultrasound that said my son's kidney was borderline dilated. Then they went on to say that sometimes the kidney issue is a sign of Down Syndrome? Did anyone tell you that? They looked for other markers but found none. I haven't gotten my triple screen test back yet. I'm totally freaked out now.

both my kids dilations were picked up during pregnancy. My son has the problem in both, and as a baby / toddler they fluctuated between 10 and 15mm and he had a variety of tests which is not nice but they are needed and he is now 9 and only requires ultrasounds once a year as they have settled a bit and are in the high end of normal. My daughter was showing problems in 1 kidney only when she was born but the dilation was at 21mm and the surgeon operated when she was 1 month old, they put a stent in and removed the stent after a month. she still has ultrasounds and unfortunately in the last year has now got dilation in both, (she is now nearly 8) the one that was operated on is quite high again sitting at 25mm and i am seeing the specialist again soon. She however, touch wood, hasnt had any infections or problems and we would not know if it wasnt for the ultrasounds.

Same story, my son had an enlarged kidney while I was pregnant, they found it on the ultrasound too. He had twice yearly scans until he was 3 1/2 years old he had outgrown the problem. No surgery required. If it does not resolve itself, then surgery but as you can read here, it sounds like they do resolve themselves more often. No reason to panic, and it's not life threatening either. Stay calm and enjoy his birth.

Hi there, My son is 7 months and when he was born he was born with kidney dilation, Found out at my scan. They kept taking me in for scans and to keep an eye on it. When he was born at around 1 month they did a scan on him and said they were coming right and now at 7 months his kidneys are normal. The docs were telling me that they will not cause him any pain but except bladder infections. Alot of people before these scans came out have these problems. So there is nothing to worry about. My little man is now 7 months and completly fine and all back to normal.

Thanks so much for your story...it does really help to know what might be in store for us cause the docs are saying not to worry but then scheduling more ultrasounds so yeah I am freaking out a bit...good to hear that even though it may not be resolved at birth there is light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks again for sharing your journey. Glad all is well with your situation.

Yes I had this problem with my now 13 year old. I bet you're freaking out right now!! Does he also have fluid in his kidney? My Dr told me that my it might be fine after he was born & they did an ultra sound when he was a day old & the problem still exsisted, I was very upset to say the least. So when he was a month old we had to take him to Children's Hospital to a pediatric urologist to have a bunch of test done. What they found was that he had one uretur (the tube that connects the kidney to the bladder) was longer on one side then on the other & that's why his kidney was like that. The Dr also said that he could possibly grow out of it (or into his longer uretur). We had to get ultra sounds done every 6 months for a several years to keep an eye on it & they also gave me a list of things to watch for. When potty training started they warned me that he would be more prone to UTI because of having to hold his pee in. So we continued watching & waiting to see what would happen. He never had an UTI & when he was almost 5 we got the same series of test done that he had when he was a month old & it seemed to clear itself up & that was pretty much the last of the problem. He hasn't had any problems since & his kidney was functioning @ 98% by the time he was 5. The Dr said you can't get any better then that. It was a huge relief for my hubby & I. My advice to you is try to stay calm & I know that's easier said then done. I hope my story doesn't scare but I wanted you to know that even if it doesn't resolve itself right after birth it still might as he gets older.
