sambucus syrup for kids from your local health food store and hyland's c plus cold tablets. they will definitely shorten the duration of the cold. if they are old enough, feeding HOMEMADE chicken soup with lots of garlic, celery and carrots also really seems to help. you can puree it and it tastes great.

I know this sounds silly, but you might want to put an onion in room. They say that the onion will draw all the bacteria out of the room and it turn the onion black. Im waiting to for the Flu season here to try it out. I cant't remember if you need to leave it whole or skin it. But there are no chemicals and no medication.

Thanks everyone took everything talked about on board. Onions work well the first couple of night they turned totally black and now have started to take a day or two to turn. Vicks on feet and back good and i have also put on a camphor bag and that is helping with his congestion. Thank you again everyone has been very helpful.

Vicks has been proven to contribute to causing pneumonia in infants and elderly. The menthol makes you feel like you're breathing well, when in fact you aren't. Not breathing deep enough is what causes pneumonia. Since people use Vicks most when they have cold symptoms, it makes it even more dangerous.
Be careful with honey if she's under a year - she may get a rash from it (same from corn syrup). Some doctors say it's fine, some do not. We used it, just be aware. That's not an allergy generally, it is an infection from the bacteria (botulism) naturally carried in both.
Being in the bathroom with steam works wonders. Requesting nebulizer treatments from the doctor if she's really congested can help prevent deeper infections. Humidifiers work well, just keep them clean (change filters weekly or so). If you use a steam type be careful - I burned myself pretty bad as an adult on one! Saline nasal drops help.

I am big on vicks on the bottom of the feet with socks. Eleviates the congestion at night. Also the onion, lemon and honey, garlic remedy (heat on low). My grandmother did this remedy for all us kids growing up. THE BEST to rid flem off the chest. Smells like hell but works. Old caribbean remedy. Onion and garlic are minced finely BTW.

Adult strength vicks is too strong for the little ones skins - it kind of burns a little ...(think dencorub!) But there is a baby balsalm vicks formulated esp for the bubs. Try it on the feet. I thought it sounded hocus pocus but it worked for my 8month old!

Believe it or not ...try Vicks Vapor Rub on the feet! Smother a bunch on his/her feet and put on socks, that won't fall off so easily, and it really helps them sleep...It will help with congestion and a cough!! Not too sure what the symptoms are that you are dealing with...but this works on my children and myself too! I love it!
