We've been home from the hospital with our son for a week now. A day or 2 after we got here his 3 year old sister got sick...had a high fever and then the runny nose, coughing, etc. started. Now I am sick also. We have done our best to keep her away from the baby as well as myself. (The past couple nights my hubby has even slept in the living room with the baby-which has killed me). We're constantly cleaning and spraying the house down with lysol but I think our newborn is catching our cold anyways. Today he has been sneezing alot and has had a little coughing. I am terrified!!! Has anyone else had a sick newborn & how did you deal with it?

if he is not running a fever or showing signs of difficult breathing i would not worry about it. with newborns i think they say a temp over 100 call the doctor (well, it would be 99 rectally which is what htey prefer you to do at this age for correct temp). two of my 4 kids slept in their car seat the first 4 months of their lives because of allergies (a doc will tell you babies cant have allergies, i beg to differ) and they absolutely horribly snotty noses those first 4 months. if he is having trouble with his nose, there is this great stuff you can buy, its a saline spray that gently sprays in their nose to clean it and the allegens out and will give him a while of clear nose (its just normal saline, no meds so it wont hurt him). a cold will not hurt him, as long as his breathing is not difficult ( you can tell this if he is breathing more than 60 times a minute and he is breathing with his abdominal muscles instead of his upper chest).

let me know if i did not answer your question, but as long as he is not having difficulty breathing or a fever then i would no tworry about it.

The key with the newborn is that things can progress faster.  Be especially aware of body temperature and hydration.  I would keep track of symptoms and as long as he is eating, is hydrated, and no fever would not be terribly worried.   Just as a precaution - it is not a bad idea to give your pediatrician a call in the morning and let them know what is going on.
