I had a mirena iud put in in Aug 2005 and am considering just leaving it in without replacing due to financial strain. I know Plan First will pay for it with a referral but the local health dept. will not give a referal without an exam and for personal reasons, I will not allow them to perform one. Does anyone know if that will have any negative effect or if it will still work after the 5 year mark? If you've kept it for longer than 5 years without having it replaced, please let me know the effects, if any. Thanks!

When I had mine replaced, the only exam was my normal annual...nothing special. Which of course should be done anyway every year. I just let the dr know I needed to replace it at my appt.
Towards the end of the 5 years I had noticed some spotting monthly (most of the 5 years I had no period). I think the hormones must get used up.
The replacement was no big deal and there is definitely a reason it is only supposed to be there for 5 years.

the mirena has a low dose of progestrone and i imagine that it will eventually run out of it. potentially causing heavier periods.
