My son has a cold and I wanted to put a humidifer in his room, but to be honest they scare me a little. I am always worried about whether I have cleaned it enough.

I use the plug in and I think using an essential oil would be as effective. I switched to Bath and Body Works Eucalyptus scentports and we all breathe better.
The BEST for congestion is Shower Soothers ( by Suda Care) - you sit in the bath room with your baby while the hot shower melts the tablets...we do it before bed when she's sick and it clears her out!

I've used the vicks waterless vaborizer with the strips. It works really well. I've also raised the bed and put vicks on my litte one's feet...it really does work!! He slept through the night :) We have an aprilaire system in our house so there is enough moisture in the air. If your air is dry...I would consider getting a humidifier too.

I find the plug in one works pretty good for me... but it doesn't really add any moisture to the room if that's what your looking for. If you just want help to stop coughing and clear up the nose at night... I really recommend vick vapour rub (or the johnson's baby version) on the bottoms of the feet and then pull socks over it... it sounds wierd... but it really works

I have 3 kids ages 4/12 to 1yr and have used the plug in version w/ the medicated pad that slides into it (I know vicks makes one) It seems to help them sleep alot better the only thing is the smell is really strong but I think that 's what makes it work so well. Also I always roll up a couple towels to put under the crib mattress to help elvate their head. Another way to go would be a filter free humidifier I just purchased one at Walmart for about $28 this way you only need to clean the holding tank and not worry about a clean filter. Good luck hope I helped a little.
