Has or does anyone else child suffer with growing pains? Anyone got any tips?

A warm bath, some childrens advil or tylenol, and a leg massage. Other than that, I suggest taking her to the doctor to make sure.

Our Daughter who is now almost 11 has suffered from these since she was about 2. I just give her Tylenol and rub down her legs- massage them until the tylenol kicks in. Also a warm bath works well with lavender. My doctor also said to make sure she is getting enough potassium.

My daughter is seven and has had "growing pains" in her shins for years. I have a sewn bag of beans that we warm in the microwave and put on her legs....instantly soothes the ache. If they occur in the morning before school, I give her one baby aspirin but typically they are a night time occurrence.

Hi Joanne, my daughter who is 4 and a half also has the leg pains. It usually occurs at night time. I will go up to her room and rub her legs for a little while and tell her that when she falls asleep, the pain will stop. It usually doesn't take too long for her to go to sleep. If it's really bad, I'll give her some Tylenol for the pain.

Just children's tylenol and massage areas that hurt. That is the only thing you can do. My six year old grandchild goes thru it and so did her mom when she was that age.

my daughter is 5 now and she has been getting glowing pains in her knees and legs since she was able to tell me where is hurt ...screeming and crying all hours of the night maybe 2 to 3 nights out of a week...sometimes less...all we could do it rub her legs ...give her childrens tylenol.....warm rags or monitered heating pad on very low ..not directly on skin......or if perfered hot water bottle with warm water.....sometimes we used rubbing alchohol and rubbed over legs to give cool feeling...or a cooling lotion for sore joints ...ask your dr if its ok....she is five now and she still wakes up with the pains.....i have givin her a plecebo pill..(tic-tac) and sometimes that works instead of tylenol. i use the orange tic tac...i hope this helps

Our pediatrician said it is very common but unfortunately not a lot you can do about it. He suggested using a topical sports creme (ie icy hot) to the affected area as needed. He also said if it becomes more of a constant issue (ie more than 4 or 5 times per month) to bring him in for further evaluation as something else may be wrong. Hope this helps! Our son has had them since age 4 and he is 6.5 now.

Yes my 8 month old has frequently. Warmer baths to help relax and sooth even if they play in it... wet heat penetrates further than dry heat into the body. Lotion and massage not be afraid to add pressure and rub everywhere small cirlces, long strokes, head to toe!

warn baths, rubbing muscles with lotion, liquid childrens pain reliever, also walking, taking a walk, walk up and down stairs...any movement of the arms and legs ask pediatrician about muscle rub lotions, find a friend who is a physical therapist..

hi i have a three and a half year old and she complains of the same thing half way thru the night sometimes she's howling and i start pressing her legs. and trust me i have shwn so many doctors they all say they are growing pains which will go away by itself

My son suffers with these pains as well. We finally had him checked out by a doctor and they confirmed that he had Osgood Schlatter disease (or growing pains). They said it is pretty common during their growth spurts. However, we also learned that he was very flat footed which increased the pains that he was having. We had incerts made for his shoes and he now wears those all of the time and it has helped tremendously. I also gave 1 aleve or ibuprofen to help ease pain when the pains were very bad.

Massage her legs with lotion. Apply pressure, especially to the knee and below. She will let you know where it hurts. In about 5 minutes the pain will stop. Cheap and easy. My 3 boys had them. My 3 year old is starting to go through it. He knows that lotion woks and says that his legs hurt and they need lotion. No meds or Dr. visits for us.

My son is 5 and he has been having foot pains for about a year and a half (off and on). I asked the doc and they said could be growing pains, but she also looked at his feet and said he was a little "flat footed." This can cause hip, leg, and foot pains. Have the doc check the arch in her feet. Just one possibility. I give my son Motrin or Tylenol and wrap his feet with an ace bandage and massage them. I don't think the ace bandage really does much, but it makes him feel better. :)

Growing pains are real and they do hurt. But, sometimes it may be a vitamin deficiency. As an older person, I drink tonic (without the gin) with a piece of lemon or lime to flavor it a bit. She may not like the taste, but it really helps. That tiny bit of quinine seems to stop the leg pains in grown-ups.

my kids get those: heating pads work like a charm. the kind you can heat in the microwave are my favorite: immediate relief. also, give her things with potassium, it helps the muscles. banana's are good as is broccoli.

you could have her soak in a warm bath sometimes that helps or get a rice pack and warm it up in the microwave so she can put that on the spots that hurt. If you don't have or can't find a rice pack then you could use a wet wash cloth and put it in a zip lock bag and leave the closure open and microwave it for short persiods like 10 seconds at a time till it warms up to a comfortable level and she can place that on her spots that hurt, it is a moist heat that helps too sometimes. Childrens Tylenol or Children's Motrin sometimes helps. My Son suffers from that as well and I think his is actually worse because he has Marfan Syndrom and he is growing at a faster rate than normal for his age. My 3 year old is exactly the same, we went to the doctors who said it was growing pains but didnt give any advice for how to help him. I will be trying all and any suggestions, i hope all the comments help your little girl. I know how you feel, hopefully this christmas my little boy gets some relief with his growing pains.

My daughter used to have that when she was little. A warm soak in the tub and some childrens Ibuprofen may help some.

My son had growing pains for years. The Dr checked him for juvenile Arthitis and when he checked out clean we knew it was just growing pains. I would give him some tylenol or ibuprofen and rub his legs for him until the pain subsided enough for him to go back to sleep. Heat always seemed to help so you might try a heating pad, of course supervised or even a warm bath.

I am new to this site and have just seen your post, I grew up with the same problem and I had what we called the magic pillow. A magnetic pillow worked wonders it was a really thin pillow with magnetics and not only did it help take away the pain the pillow adds another level of comfort for a child.

I personally know what she is going through. When i was in 2nd grade that started just the same. My legs would hurt me so bad and my mom would take me to the doctor and they said the same thing over and over even when she took me to different doctors/hospitals..I never got treated for it but eventualy i grew out of them. It took a LONG time though. My mom would just give me some meds for the pain and then rub my legs and then put a heating pad on them to sooth the pain. She also let me sleep in the bed with her. I feel so bad for your child, It really hurts. I would cry almost everynight with the pain. Hopefully oneday someone will atleast say its something else instead of growing pains. If i had that many of growing pains shouldn't it mean that i should be like 7 ft tall now. by the way im 24 and im only 5ft 1. I don't think its just growing pains. hope she starts feeling better soon.

my 10 year old daughter always says her legs hurt. i have taken her to the doctor and we always get told it will go away on its own to give her motrin for the pain. she still will wake up with these leg pains ,i dont really know what to do for her.

My son was and still is the same way....his happens mostly at night though....I sit for awhile and rub the spots that are hurting him, then I get a warm compress and put it on after rubbing. If it is really bad then I give him some tylenol for pain relief.

my son is 5 and he suffers with his legs so bad i took him docters ,he had blood tests and they were fine so they just put it down to growing pains.They told me to give him ibroprofen and calpol together thats all i can do it seems to be worse wen he as been reaaly active during they day for some reason ???

I rub Ben gay into my kids legs & wrap them in an ace bandage or if they're young enough, just slip on a tube sock. It works great , no meds and works immediately!!! My mom used to do it to me when I was little. Works like a charm!

I had it when i was a child and still do and my son that is 8 has it. the one thing that seems to help and sounds crazy, but please try it is pressure. Sit lightly or lean over the spot that hurts just bear your or some weight on it and it goes away almost immediately or in a minutes. I always put my legs on top of my sons legs or he will put them under my legs and it goes away. My doctor prescribed tums one tablet daily for calcium it helped. But the bearing weight (pressure) was the most immediate effective remedy. It still works for me, my son sits on my legs when they hurt. Make sure she wears longs socks or has socks on when she has pain .

Hello My 5 year old little boy would wake up with his legs hurting at night when he was 4. I took him to the Dr. because he got to where he complained alot about his legs hurting the Dr. laughed at me and says this little man is just growing. Now my 4 year old little girl is telling me her legs hurt. Guess she is growing to!!! Anyway now my son is five and he very rarely complains of leg pain anymore.

My daughter had growing pains really bad so bad that I sometimes thought I was with my grandmother, going on a walk was so painful for her. The only thing I can tell you is that the pain is real and eventually they do out grow it.( Waiting for them to out grow it seems like it takes forever and they next thing you know their growing pains are gone and they are almost all grown up) We did PT which helped she just grew so fast everthing could not keep up.

My 5 year old has them in his calves every now and then...And the only thing that helps is getting in a warm bath it helps almost instantly...Or a water bottle with warm water... Hope that helps

As a child and young adult I often had these "growing pains", I can remember being taken to the ER for them at some points. A change in diet was all it took to help me. My mother took me off of all processed foods, food coloring, preservatives, and any sugar. It also helped with my moods & attention. The pains were basically my body reacting like a drug addicts does. I was having with-drawls from these things in my system. It was allot of work to figure out what were my triggers, but was worth it for all of us. I use this type of diet control with my children. It does help, although I am not as strict on it as my mother was, I can see a difference. Best of luck

I grew up with growing pains! It is so painful & I feel for your daughter. The best thing that worked for me was epsom salt bath. I was crying in pain 1 night & my grandmother woke up & ran me a bath with epsom salt in it, I was out of pain within minutes! I could've kissed the ground she walked on!! I experienced them myself when I was 14. I would wake in the night the same way. I would stand in the shower and splash cold or cool water over them with a washcloth, then be back asleep in no time.

my now teenage son had them really bad in the legs. They called it oshilogers or something. The bones grew faster than the tendons and ligiments. He wore these straps just below the knee and it seemed to help.

When I was little girl I would have these pains in my legs too. My mom would rub my legs until I fell back to sleep. I think I was about 10 when it stopped, I have just read an article on restless leg syndrome and one lady said she put dropps of rosemary oil in with olive or veggie oil and rubs a little on her legs before she goes to bed at night and no more restless legs. good luck

all 3 of my boy had it it is when the bones grow and the tendends have to grow to catch up thats the best way to discribe it. all i would do is give them warm baths rub there sore areas and panadole there is not really much you can do unless you want to go and get drugs.

I had growing pains too, I still do at times. The best thing that helped with me was to take a really hot bath there's nothing doctors can really do I was put the in the hospital for 2 wks and finaly they called it growing pains. After her bath let her lie down on the couch or bed on her side and put a pillow inbetween her legs or lie on her back and put a pillow under her legs that's wat worked best for me. Trust me I know what the poor lil girl is goin through it really does hurt a lot. Keep us posted.

I agree with the others. My daughter had terrible growing pains in her legs. The mother's touch is the most healing thing in the world! Just rub her little legs and heat such as a covered heating pad (not too high). Keep up the good work Mom!

I have growing pains every so often to this day, but they use to be really bad when I was younger. The best thing I can do is take a hot bath and drink some hot tea. Then after I get out and get in my PJs I do some stretching and yoga. I am not too much into taking pills for it, but I guess that all deepens on how bad it is and how old your child is. Anyway, this always seemed to help me. Good Luck!
