Have a go at wiping first

I have 2 nephew's, one is 4, the other will be 5 next week. Both don't wipe themselves when the do #2's. They just sit & yell out 'I'm finished', & wait. They both go to preschool & the same thing happens there. Their Mum has no clues how to get them to at least try to wipe themselves first. My kids are many years past this stage, so I can't remember what we did for our kids. I am about to look after my nephews whilst their mother recovers from surgery, which will be about a month, & I'd like them to be wiping themselves by the time she's better. I've talked with mr nearly 5 & asked why he won't wipe himself, he says it's yukky (we practice good hygene after toilet use) & he just shakes his head & says no, don't want to do it. I've also tried giving him baby wipes instead of using loo paper, but he doesn't like that either. Any ideas please.

I agree with Michelle. My oldest (now 5) didn't want to wipe either, so we started the cottenelle wipes. He still thought it was gross, but I told him all "big boys" wipe themselves, and he had to at least try. It took some time and persistance; I also told him I would wipe again after he tried, if he wanted. Now he does everything on his own, and his potty training brother just knows that is what is supposed to happen. Good Luck!

We have 3 kids, a 7 yr old boy and 5 yr old twins (one of each). The boys took much longer to get them to wipe, I think our daughter wiped easier because she had to do so every time anyway. We went the baby wipes route as well but they refused to use anything "baby" related because we'd kept telling them big boys and girls use the potty for a year while training. The oldest told us the paper gets stuck when he used it so he wanted us to wipe him so it wouldn't get stuck. We started using Cottenelle "Big People" wipes (these are actually flushable and baby wipes aren't) instead of anything with the word baby or kids on it (and told them we used them too) and they started taking care of this themselves wihtin a week or so. You could try offering a good wiping reward chart sticker, and after "X" number of stickers earned they earn a reward (extra play time, an extra bedtime story, lollipop, matchbox car, bottle of bubbles). I wish all of you good luck!
