My son constantly had ear infections until he was 18 months old. Finally the doctors agreed that the best thing for him was tubes because he kept perforating his ear drum....it was the BEST thing we ever did. He had his tubes placed 16 months ago and has never had another ear infection.

Just know that he'll be a little groggy after the surgery and he'll have to wear ear plugs for baths and swimming. Also you want to make sure they check his earing after the surgery. They normally check it at the post-op appointment, but my sons were blocked so I had to put drops in his ears for 2 weeks and then come back. GOOD LUCK!

My parmacist started knowing me by my first name because of all the antibiotics I was getting for my sons constant ear infections.  He just turned two when I requested to my sons pediatrician that I wanted to see an ear, nose, throat, specialist.  My pediatrcian kept telling me that he would grow out of it.  I started hearing horror storying about other childrens speech being affected and didn't want to be in that boat.  My son got tubes not even a month after his 2nd B-day.  He has an ear infection pretty much every 10 days from March up to his surgery.  I lost count.  I'm sure my son thought that being sick was normal.  The antibiotics were not working very well and had to take a steroid too.  It was miserable during that time.  I missed 30 days of work and 2 weeks of classes.

Anyway - I had to request my sons pediatrician to make a referral.

My son had sooooo many ear infections.  Every ten days he had another one.  Got tubes in his ears two months ago and has not had one ear infection since.  They fall out on there own after 12-22 months, surgery only took about 30 minutes,  he was bouncing off the walls the same day after a good nap.  I would dress him in warm pj because the post op rooms are cold and bring a favorite blanket or stuffed animal.  Have had no problems with them.  The doctor can see them at his check ups.  I got to look at them too.  They are little blue tubes.  I'm sure he will do fine!

When do they decide to put tubes in?? My son is 4 1/2 months old, and is on his 4th ear infection, and one of my sisters daughters had alot of earinfections and she now has problems with her speech cuz she couldn't hear right from all of her ear infections, and i just don't want that to happen to my son........should i ask the doctor about it or will they suggest it when they think that the time is right??? and how many do they think is too many ear infections???

My three year old had to have tubes put in his ear's almost a year ago...It was such a simple procedure. 5 min's to put them under 5 min's to put them in and 5 min's to bring them out of the anistetic. Really it was that fast. Coles tubes are going to be replaced on the 23 of April as well as his atenoid's(?) are being taken out at the same time. I know as soon as he had the tubes put in the differance was unreal. He could hear the smallest thing's. The look on his face almost made me cry. Anyway good luck and remember it really is harder on you then it is on them!

My son got tubes few weeks after turning two. It was very quick and about two hours after surgery he was playing at home like nothing ever happened. It helped with ear infections - he had them  non-stop for 4 months before getting tubes and only 1 since. Also, my son takes swimming classes so we got him the ear plugs and he never used them. Dr said that they are unnecessary as long as the water is clean (I also had concerns about swimming in the ocean and dr said not to worry about it). We've never had an issue  and it's been a year and 3 months now that he's had his tubes.

I know it is so stressful going into surgery, but this is a quick one and recovery time is minimal. Good luck and I will keep my fingers crossed for you and your son.

My only advice comes from my own experience with ear surgery. I developed hearing loss with my first pregnancy and had surgery to improve my hearing. After having it done (and being able to hear again) was actually painful. Be aware of his surroundings and public places for the first few weeks and judge his reaction to the noise levels. The restaurants and (music) at church was the most bothersome at first. It has gotten better, just at church I have to make sure I stay away from the speakers. Good Luck, I pray that all goes well. God Bless!

Sorry to hear that. I have been down this road with my little one too. It is a very fast and safe surgery. It will take about 15-30 mins and he will be alittle groggy afterwards. But after all said and done he will feel so much better. He will also have to have ear plugs so the water doesn't get in there at anytime like bath or swimming. They normaly will only be there for about a year. Is there something you want to know about?
