Babys can be born with teeth so dont let people tell you he cant have teeth. The thing to look for is a very small white bump (a bit like a pimple or white head) then you will know if there is a tooth lurking. Frozen teething rings filled with gel work well and lots of cuddles.

Five months does sound young but don't forget that babies do go through pre-teething. My little girl would bite down on my fingers as early as 3 months. When she would do that it seemed to help ( it's called counter pressure ). If you use a cold wash cloth it's not advised to put it in the freezer. Just put it in the refrigerator. My doctor told me at 4 months I would use baby teething gel or teething tablets (definitely ask your doctor first). They both worked really well on my little girl. I also used cold teething rings. Anything that offers counter pressure for those teeth usually works. Good luck with the teething. Hope that helps.

Our pediatric dentist recommends a damp washcloth placed in the freezer. It will numb the gums as they are chewing on it. You can also massage your babies gums with your finger (being sure that your hands are well sanitized). 5 weeks is pretty early, but I have seen newborns with a tooth, so it is not completely unheard of.

5 weeks old is a little young for teething. What makes you think its teething? Is he just grumpy? Could it be an ear infection?

As far as the breastfeeding is concerned, just in case you are, I would like to point out that there is no such thing as breastmilk not being rich enough. (old wive's tale, check with a lactation consultant) Also if done correctly, most everyone, can have enough milk, if NO supplementing is being done and the baby is being fed on demand, no supplementing also includes pacifiers. A baby's urge to suck is a natural instinct to increase milk supply. So if you are breastfeeding, just feed on demand.
Babies don't always chew from hunger either, sometimes its just from finding their hands and they put everything in their mouths.

5 weeks is pretty young for teething, but you can give then teething toy or a damp cloth to chew on.

It is highly unlikely that your five week old baby is teething. If the baby is always chewing on their hands it is because they are hungry. If you are breastfeeding you may not be producing enough milk, or rich enough milk to be satisfying your child. If you are convinced the child is teething attach a small chew toy for babies to a pacifier clip and see if this will calm your baby down. If it keeps up for a couple of days I'd see your pediatrician as your child may have an ear infection.
