My 6th month old has what I believe is diaper rash for the first time. I noticed that the area around her "poo place" (for a lack of better terms) has been really red for the last couple of days and today when I wiped her it was bleeding! Bless her little heart she's been crying for two ours strait. I just started putting butt paste on it this morning but I don't know if it's making it better or worse. Any suggestions would be nice. P.S. I'm still calling the Dr. tomorrow morning.

Also try just plain baby power not the scented kind.  Plain cornstarch baby powder

My little girl had diaper rash-or what we thought was diaper rash really bad across her whole bottom.  We tried everything under the sun and then resorted to that it was a yeast infection.  They had us using Nystatin at every diaper change with no effect.  We were about to try steriod cream when I decided to try a different diaper (we had her in pampers cruisers and moved to pampers baby dry) and the rash went away within a day and we have had only minor cases of diaper rash since that Desitin takes care of.  The Butt paste also works wonders and if all else fails-ask your Doctor for Dr. Loves Butt Paste-it is a prescription strength ointment that is literally like paste and that works well as well.  We mostly use Desitin at the first sight of redness and usually have no problems.  Good Luck!

Sprinkle a little corn starch onto the area each time you change the diaper.  It was the oly thing that worked for my son.

Worked every time with my daughter also! 95% of the time the rash would be gone by the very next diaper change- I couldn't believe it when I tried it!

I have 8 kids and the very best thing I found was  just good old Bag Balm. It will heal right up. My oldest  boy had terrible allergies and he always had diaper rash.

I found that if I stop using baby wipes and just a cloth to wipe the bumb it seems to help alot.  Also letting her bumb air/dry out that also helps.

When my son has diaper rash-I use desitin overnight-(cause it's thicker) at every diaper change-and I put baking soda in his bath water.  It has always helped.  I tried the Butt Paste at the recommendation of lots of other people and it made it alot worse.  I have sensitive skin and can only use hypoallergenic everything, so I assume he must have been allergic to something in it. The baking soda in the bath water is a remedy from my Mamaw.
*As a note of caution-whenever using desitin, it only belongs on the bottom, not the front-it has been known to, in rare cases, cause parts to grow together. This happened with my aunt's youngest. Scary.  They really mean it when it says to use externally only-they mean-really externally.

If you are breast feeding and have the Lansinoh creme on hand use that.  I have used it with all 3 of mine and the rash was gone in 2 days and the redness gone by the next morning.  It is great for everything.  You have to be carefull with some of the remedies that have food ingredients as this can promote a yeast rash.

Have you ever heard of Bag Balm.  I comes in a small square tin with a cow print on itat the drug store.  I can't remember the maker of it.  i swear by it.  It soothes the redness and relieves the chapping.  It was origanlly made for dairy cows but it is now approved for human use and it is a miracle cream.

After you wipe her butt, let it dry completly, and then put TRIPLE PASTE on it.  You can buy it at Walmart, if you cant find it just ask the pharmisist.  Make sure it isnt yeast, cause if is you will need antifungal yeast cream.  I hope all is well.

Use Udder butter. Yes it is normaly used on cows, but works wonders on diaper rashes. My son has very sensitive skin and we tried everything from mylanta, to olive oil, to tea bags. A&D ointment is good, but not if the skin is bleeding. It will only burn the rash more. You can buy udder butter at a local feed store for animals, it only costs about 6 dollars. Good luck!

Most people think I'm crazy when I tell them to use UdderBalm! I didn't think anyone would have wrote that! The kind at Walmart in the black and white tube doesn't work as good either. We always get the kind at the feed stores. My boyfirend still thinks I'm crazy when I tell him to put udderbalm on his burns from work. But it actually works, I've never found anything else that works that fast. It definately works on more than just diaper rashes too.

I found that hydrocortizone works great on rashes. I have 5 children soon to be 6 and that is the best. It soothes the bottom as well as heal it. It is over the counter so you can just go into a local drug store and get some. also, after it is healed try putting Vaseline for Diaper Rashes on her every time you change her. it helps prevent rashes also. I use that on my 6 month old and she has not yet had a diaper rash.

BINGO Girl! You hit it on the head- I have been a childcare provider and have done more bumper changes than the average bear! When you get faced with a raw bottom from a RX or Food allergy, or too much juice, or just plain tummy issues -- mix up maalox and Desitin cream and that rash is heading for the hills!!! Here is one more quick tip for the mother of a "Busy Child" Ice packs-- store bought are costly, ice cubes hurt and dont form well around a little arm, leg or head. Take white rice put it in a ziploc bag and leave in the freezer- when you need it pull it out it forms to any shape, it wont freeze your skin and if it hapens to get left behind it is okay- or if it breaks open it wont hurt your child like the toxic materials in the store bought ones!!! Have a few more if anyone is interested.

The only thing that has worked for me is desitin original. Use it faithful for at least 12 hrs. and should clear up. It could also be yeast. Ask your ped. if it does not clear up soon. The desitin creamy has proven to be worthless for my kids. I have three daughters and have done daycare for over six years.

I was told a good solution by a midwife cover babies bottom with Sudocream or zinc 7 caster oil and then put bay powder over the top and this forms a barrier.

Pretty much since my 2 1/2 year old Son was born, he's been getting horrible, sometimes bloody, and even bumpy rashes that make him scream in pain! A homemade remedy I just recently learned of (sure would've been handy the last 2 1/2 years!) that seems to work better than anything else i've tried is a mixture of A&D ointment, Maalox (liquid), and corn starch (until it becomes a paste-like texture). From experience, I surely recommend it!

Quoting Micheline:

honey, if you have raw honey it's even better. Any honey works it kills the bacteria while soothing the skin.

The concern is with infant botulism.

Botulinum spores are found widely in soil, dust, and honey. Adults who swallow botulinum spores are almost never affected. When infants swallow the spores, however, the spores can germinate in their immature gastrointestinal tracts and begin producing botulinum toxin. This has occurred even when the honey was only used to sweeten a pacifier (European Journal of Epidemiology, Nov 1993).

Botulinum toxin is the most poisonous natural substance known to man. The lethal dose is only 0.0000001 mg per kg of body weight -- an amount that would be invisible to the naked eye. This tiny amount in the blood stream can cause death within minutes through paralysis of the muscles used in breathing.

Infant botulism has been found on every continent except Africa (Journal of Perinatology (2007) 27, 175–180). In the United States it is most common in the states of California, Utah, and Pennsylvania. While infant botulism can occur from taking in soil or dust (especially vacuum cleaner-bag dust), eating honey is the number one preventable cause. Corn syrups are not sterilized and may also be a source of contamination (The AAP Red Book, 2000).

Infant botulism can occur any time in the first year of life, but like SIDS it is most common in the first six months. In fact it has been suggested that it might be the cause of death in up to 10% of cases (Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics; Saunders 1992).

Thankfully, in most instances of infant botulism, the amount of toxin is so incredibly minuscule that the case remains mild. For this reason it is often misdiagnosed.

The first symptom of infant botulism is often report new engorgement. Sometimes this is the full extent of the disease. If the disease progresses, however, the child moves less and less and might begin to drool from the mouth. Gagging and sucking reflexes diminish. Loss of previous head control is also an important sign. Complete respiratory arrest can occur either suddenly or gradually.

If an otherwise healthy baby develops constipation, followed by weakness and difficulty in sucking, crying, or breathing, then infant botulism should be considered the most likely diagnosis until proven otherwise.

When infant botulism is diagnosed, the average Intensive Care Unit stay for the baby is about one month, typically including mechanical ventilation and continuous tube feedings. This is followed by another 2 weeks on the hospital ward, with a total hospital cost often exceeding $100,000 (Pediatrics; Feb 1991). Thankfully if the botulism is correctly diagnosed and the baby receives appropriate supportive care, almost all will recover fully and completely. The fatality rate for babies who have been hospitalized with botulism is less than 1%. Recently, an antitoxin for infant botulism has been developed and shown to reduce hospital days, mechanical ventilation, and tube feedings (The AAP Red Book, 2000).

The single most effective way to prevent infant botulism is for infants to avoid honey. Breast feeding also appears to lessen the severity of botulism cases.

Therefore, despite other health benefits, honey is an unsafe food for any infant. HONEY SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN TO CHILDREN YOUNGER THAN 12 MONTHS.

Breast feeding, though, is a great way to prevent or decrease allergy symptoms. Breast feeding and minimizing your daughter's being exposed to potential allergens (such as cigarette smoke, , etc.) are the best ways to serve your goals of reducing her allergies and her allergy symptoms. These measures will benefit your daughter now, and the benefit will last for years to come.

this may sound odd... but it has worked with my son and with children at the daycare i used to work at... try pouring some malox in the diaper/ on the affected area. it is suppose to neutralize the acidity in the urin which could be causing the rash. it was a life saver when my son had horrible rash while he was teething.

Another thing, DO NOT use baby wipes, the alchohol will irritate the area more. Oh, first time I heard of using Maalox, but as soon as I put it on he stopped crying. I was told it stops the burning feeling. I usedBest of luck to you and baby.

Hope you find something that works for your poor little girl!
