I have started my son on rice cereal and in the beginning he was really gassy/constipated so my doctor said to mix prune puree in with the cereal. it doesnt really seem to helping him poop more freqently or easily... he had a painful poop today so i skipped the cereal tonight. i am breastfeeding him too so he is getting liquids that way. I am wondering if i should start giving him water or skip the cereal or???? any suggestions would be appreciated. i never had this problem with my first son! Thanks

I have heard Miralax works for some but I have also heard horror stories so please research miralax and side effects for kids even before you ask your dr. My son was horribly constipated on rice cereal but we switched to oatmeal cereal (single grain) and it made a huge difference but he was still constipated. The oatmeal cereal has more fiber than the rice. I started giving him probiotics (Natren Life Start is the best brand if your son isn't allergic to milk). Once I started the probiotics, it took 4 days for him to have a huge poop. Then he had one again the next day. He started pooping everyday and now he poops twice a day. I still give him the Natren and I swear by it. There are other brands that may be good as well but try to stay away from a blue bottle called Jarro. It made my son cry all night and I took it to see why and it caused stomach pains. But really the Natren was a life saver! (and remember to switch to oatmeal cereal too)!

Just to make sure it's actually constipation, are his stools solid like an adults? That would be the definition of constipation. If so, I found that anything pear worked really well for my son. I'd feed him pears or mixed pear fruit and sometimes he'd have pear juice as well. More veggies might help as well, as the fiber should help his digestive tract move more effectively.

What kind of cereal are you feeding him, and are you mixing in any fruit? I'd stay away from bananas for now, they can be a culprit of constipation, and maybe try some baby oatmeal or bran cereal instead of rice (if that's what you're giving).

Again, constipation isn't the frequency of poop but the consistency. If he's got normal baby poos but still seems to be in pain, I'd discuss possible allergies or maybe food intolerances with your doctor.

My daughter was the same when she started solids the health visitor advised cooled boiled water mixed with 100% apple juice. It works very well and within a couple of hours. It also helps give them more liquid that is not a food sorce to help push things along. Also I found a warm bath does the trick to help relax the bowel. Try the apple juice first. My daughter loved it so much that she was still drinking apple juice and water until she was 2.

I would ask your doctor before you change anything or ad anything, Also ash him/her about giving your son a little miralax. That is what my doc always said to use and it worked, but mine were over 12 months when they started getting constipated.
