I need help with finding good affordable childcare in the Richmond, VA area. My son is 7 1/2 months and this will be his first time being without me. My mom has kept him a few times, but only for 3 hours at the most. Please help....I am looking to return to work Monday; I know short notice. However, my Mom will start out watching him, but I don't know if she has the patience to handle him for 8 hours.

Thanks Sharon! That was plan having my Mom do 1/2 days or every other day. I've looked on Dept. of Social Services licensing site for child care providers and it is so hard to make a decision. Ugh....I really hate this!

Yes it is really scary just thinking about my son being in the care of someone other than me or family. He is so attached to me! I know it is going to be a tough adjustment for him and me. He cries sometimes when I walk into another room and he can't see me. I know this is something that most babies go through around his age, but it is so stressful. Also, I am breastfeeding and he rarely get a bottle, so that makes him even more attached. I am praying that I find someone that is good. He will not start going to a facility for a couple of weeks. My Mom said she would watch him and I plan to pay her, but this is just a backup for when and if she can't handle it anymore. Thanks for all your advise....wish me luck!

it is nerve wracking. I felt like I was holding my breath all day long, the first couple of times I left a child with a new sitter.

one time I took the personal recommendation of a friend of the family and I didn't bother to go see the home... I cried all the way to my first day on the job and prayed and prayed and prayed and ... well you get the picture. I also called my husband at the first chance I got and told him to go get the kids.

under any circumstances but our dire straits at the time, I would NEVER have left my kids there and to this day I kick myself and cringe remembering the few hours they were in that 'home'.

You will feel a little better seeing nice toy filled house with a room just for babies.

If your mom wants to watch him full time, maybe that can be worked out - be sure to pay her, even if it is a token payment of 50 cents an hour, and the daycare can be a drop-off-as-needed ..?

Maybe your mom could watch him every other day? half a day, every other day?

newspaper - check your newspaper for daycare and start traveling NOW to visit each home to see if its ok for your child to stay there. omg I made that mistake ONCE, never again... go see the home!
