I never started feeding my little one jar food, I actually blended up what ever me and my husband was eating and fed it to our son. I tried the jar version of plums a few times to help with his constipation but he did not like it. When I took a nutrition course in college I was pregnant and my professor stressed the importance of a healthy diet as early as you can. Veggies first, meat, then starch. I have had no problems with getting my son to eat anything (except jar food). A small food processor or a Magic Bullet from Walmart works great for blending up foods. my son is now 14 months old and he eats broccoli, carrots(steamed), avocados, corn and every fruit you can think of. Just be careful about bananas, they can cause constipation, raisins and prunes will help!!

If you are already feeding him food from the jar like Heinz or Gerbers they make some finger foods too. You can start feeding them peas, soft cubes of veggies like carrots, etc. Make everything about pea size and make sure it is soft especially to start off. Soft fruits and veggies are probably what you want to start off with in finger foods. Mine loved banana. You can still feed jar food. Finger foods are just more fun and kids love their new found independence plus it is teaching some new skills. I fed mine until they were full and rejected the food at a meal. You may find yourself feeding them a 1/2 jar with some finger foods. I wouldn't stress that part.

Baby mum-mums are a great starter if your little one has not had any finger foods.

I just started chopping really finely the foods we were eating, my kids sat at the table with us and got used to the whole family time thing. roughly mashed potatoes, meat and steamed veg are great. I remember peeling and chopping grapes you have to be careful with skins they are easy to choke on. I tried not to introduce my kids to sweets early on not b4 they had made all the rounds of veg and some meats, and then fruits. be careful with fish and peanut products off the top. I fed my kids this stuff once they could communicate properly that something may be amis. This does not ensure they will not be picky eater in a few years but they come back around. tip: children need to try foods on average 11 times b4 the develop a taste for it! so do not give up :) best of luck and congrats 1st time mum.

At 8 months old our son was eating fresh steamed veggies of all kinds, fresh fruit of all kinds, whole grain crackers, cheese cubes, homemade hummus and pita bread, avocados, homemade sweet potatoes fries, beans of all kinds (black beans are his favorite), eggs yolks, Annie’s crackers and cookies ( an organic brand ), pirates booty, dried cereals (like kix's or cheerios) Homemade fruit smoothies. These all were some of our son's favorites when he was 8 months old.

By the way, the meats that are shaped like hotdogs are very soft and dissolve, unlike an actual hotdog. Just thought I should clarify.

I started my babies with gerber finger foods. They have little meats that are shaped like hotdogs, but are actually turkey, chicken , ham, and beef. They also have fruits, like you would buy canned, but smaller. I loved their whole meals that looked like tv dinners, but were meant for babies and their nutritional needs. My kids loved all of it. I am partial t o Gerber, b/c I know their food is designed especially for babies, but I'm sure you could do the same thing with regular food, just cut up really small. Do NOT feed him raisins or hotdogs at first.....very big choking hazards. If I remember anything else, I will let you know.
