how do i know when to transfer my son into a big kid bed? he is almost 2 but we still have to put him in his crib and that is only after he falls asleep with me or his dad... any ideas that could lead to a more independant bed time?

When he climbs out of his crib is usually when it's time to switch. But I agree that 2 is good if he hasn't attempted it yet.

2 is a good time. You need to ask yourself, are you ready? Moving a toddler to a big boy bed takes perseverance and patience. I transfered my 3 boys slowly. First I removed the sliding panel of the crib and put something soft, like a super soft blanket on the floor, just incase. But if you are not comfortable with that, you have to remove the crib completely and replace it with a toddler bed(closer to the floor). Sometimes a regular single bed can be a little scary - it's so big! Get your son involved with the choosing of a new quilt, make him believe this is all his idea and it's SO exciting.
Now, this is the fun part. Be prepared, he will come out 2 - 4 times before he goes' to sleep. Be firm and keep placing him back in his bed. It will be very frustrating, stick with it, it will be worth it. Your baby is on his way to be a big boy. Good luck.
