My son is 7mths old and always loved his solid food since i started at 4.5mths. He now has four teeth with the fifth and sixth ones about to poke through anyday.

For almost a week he cries when i try to feed him his solids and about the only thing he eats comfortably atm is yoghurt and sometimes toast fingers - but obviously he cant eat this three times a day. Any suggestions? Would he be getting bored with what i feed him? (Mash veg & fruit, cereal and porridge) Should I start to worry yet?

Thanks all for your help. I started mixing apple in with his veges and swapping one spoon of apple for one of veges and every other method to trick him :) At least this way he is eating something other that just apple & yoghurt. Also mixed custard in with his cereal which he responded to quite well. Chopped his banana instead of mash and also started giving him risoni that he enjoys chewing. Ah what fun!!! The teeth have now come through and he is getting less fussy now which is good. Unfortunately has now come down with a cold!!! Ah the ever changing life of a mum :)

Its not the food he obviously loves it still if he tries to eat it. Its just the teething my son was doing the same thing at 5 months when his first set of two came through. The only thing I did was give him a cold facecloth before every meal because it numbed his gums lol. I also tried oragel an hour or 2 before his meals but it didn't work cuz he couldn't feel anything at all lol. So try the cold facecloth before he might like it or he just might throw it its up to him really. oh and deffintely try different flavours mixed with his porridge, my son loves mixed fruits with his.

like someone else said some babies like feeding themselves my daughter will not spoon feed she pulls her head away if we want her to spoon feed we have to hold her arms down or make her watch tv and sneak it inot her mouth. teething will also make them go off food. my daughter loves feeding herself but for 2 weeks recently went off food altogether at 12 months. her dieticians said i have to keep offering it. but at 7 months jst give him what he wants to eat if hes happy with finger food give him that, toast crackers with spreads like cheese spread, vegemite and butter, peanut butter, slices of cheese, cheese sticks fruit bars, peeled apples etc. babies do get bored wth the same foods well mine does so make sure you have a big variety and my daughters dietician advised custards after every meal but not baby stuff the normal stuff and keep the yogurts up you can always add cut up fruit or weetbix and porrige to it and as you prob know u can add butter, cheese or cream to mash and the vegies.

don't feed him.......let him feed himself.

(maybe thats why he likes the toast, coz he's doing it himself.)

just a thought :)

The tablet that Teresa is talking about is good or the baby orajel. I used it all the time. They have this net things you can put cold fruit in. They can chew the heck out of it and it will feel good on their gum's or a frozen teething ring. Don't worry about the food. They will eat when they eat. Just continue to offer healthy stuff. He is getting all that they need.

Try homeopathic teething tablets, they worked great for my son when he was teething and you don't have to worry about any side effects. As for the food, at 7 months he is probably still having formula or breastmilk, so he is getting the nutrition from that. Everything else is just extra, so don't worry if he won't eat variety now. It will get better soon, I promise!!

If your little guy is nursing, it's a non-issue: complementary foods at this point are entertainment and exploration much more than necessary nutrition. It's probably true for artificial breastmilk substitutes, too, but I don't know...

But kids don't get 'bored' the way we think of it, with nourishing foods.

You may like to try avocado: lots of healthy fats, nice and soft on the sore, itchy gums.

Worrying will not help anything.

I don't think you have to worry at all. Teething is so different for every kid and your little guy is having a tough time stomaching solids...it could be a texture thing considering that his mouth is going thru a bit of trauma and he is very likely uncomfortable for the better part of an entire day. If all he will eat is yogurt and toast then that's what you feed him...and then just gradually try and work something else in that has a smooth texture but isn't too aromatic so it won't upset his tummy. I think once his other teeth break thru completely and his body adjusts to the changes he will be back to his old self.

I don't think you have to worry just yet. I think it is related more to his teething than anything else. When I first fed my son solids I could not get him to eat fruit but now that he is 17 months old he always wants his fruit cup. What you can try is putting some ora-jel or baby anbesol on his gums about 20 minutes before you feed him or let him chew on a cold teething ring and you might find this could make all the difference. It could simply be the acidic content of the food on his swollen gums that is making him a fussy eater. Have you tried mixing his meat in with his yogourt??? Greeks do it all the time....that is what tzatziki is made of.

i wouldn`t worry about it my kids are 19 months old and there doing the same thing with there food its just a faze. as for teething try rubbing some rum or vodka on his gummes not only will it numb the pain of teething but he will sleep better. also try giving him some mashed potatos with his vegies and put fruit in his porridge. thats what i did and i worked so ya good luck.
