Help with yeast diaper rash

First try cloth diapers while he has the yeast infection. They will keep the moisture away from his bottom. If this isn't possible, then make sure you change his diaper very often. I found w/ my son (he suffered for 2 years w/ yeast infections) OTC cream-jock itch cream (it's has a different chemical than monistat/can find this in girl section-larger tube than jock itch cream). Monitor his sugar intake. Sugar feeds yeast! Also give acidophilus-they make a powder form for infants. Nature's Way makes a primadophilus (contains all the acidophilus and bifidobacterium you need). Local health food stores have it. Since he is 9.5 months, he can now eat baby yogurt. Go for it (everyday). If you are nursing, make sure you don't have a yeast infection, although it would have shown up as oral thrush in the baby. I didn't know at first what to do with my son, but now with my twins, I am prepared. Hope these ideas help.

i found when my kids had the yeast rashes, to give them a warm bath with baking soda in the water, then let them air dry. i didnt put the cremes on them that the doctors gave cause they seemed to make it worse. i used penaten creme. it is very thick but it is a barrier to help the raw skin heal faster. i have used this with all 3 of my kids even for regular diaper rashes. i hope this helps.

Maybe have him tested for allergies...my grandson went through some really terrible rashes and it only finally ended only when my daughter-in-law gave up and potty-trained him early. He is now MUCH happier.

thanks for all the suggestions.  We have been using a wet cloth instead of wipes, and changing as frequently as possible.  We bought some probiotics tonight and hopefully they will make a difference.  He's not too bad when he pee's but he breaks out really badly everytime he has a bowel movement so I am wondering if it's something he is eating, but there is nothing new that has been introduced in the past couple weeks.

Lotrimin has worked wonders with my kids diaper rash. This is what my pediatrician recommended.

My son had yeast infection his second week, it looked horrible! I was terrified... Although i used the perscribed cream, I took grandma's advice, and about twice a day, I would take off his diaper, clean it with wash cloth, and put olive oil, and wraped him a cloth... and it worked wonders. i wish you the best!

i always used yeat infection medicine from walmart on my kids and it clear right up... I even bought the walmart brand... It worked better them any medicine the dr. ever gave me, usually over night....  now adays there are so many different brands i just got the 7 day because it had a big tube of cream to use.....Good luck!

Hi Jeanette, My daughter had very bad diaper (or nappy as we call it) rash and Lavender oil got rid of it completely. You'll get it in any health shop or pharmacy. I just put a few drops in her nappy everytime i changed her. The rash was gone within days!! Some of my friends have used it on their children and its worked to!! Its also great for ear infections.. just rub a bit behind the ear!!

The only thing about using the canestan cream is that (depending on) the amount of chlortriamazole in it (usually 1%) it can thin the skin.

My suggestions are along the more natural route - first make sure it's yeast and not staph - as they are different rashes and both can look alarming.

Second - put your son on probiotics - Nature's Way makes Primodophilus for Children ages 0-5 - it's a powder that can be added to yogurt, milk, etc - you can also use small amounts in his mouth.

We no longer use conventional diaper creams - unless things are terrible and then we use burt's bees. What we use now is MotherLove Diaper rash and thrush care cream - www.motherlove.com. It contains herbs that are anti-yeast and it works very well.

Limit the amount of sugar he consumes - although a child this young probably isn't consuming gads of it (i hope!).

Do you use cloth or disposable diapers? Are you breastfeeding? Yeast is easily passed back and forth during breastfeeding even if you have no symptoms. You can find great information on dealing with yeast (candida) at www.drjacknewman.com in the handout section.

The probiotics really help - I've even put the mother love cream on my son and then dusted his diaper area with the probiotics at night and it's cleared by the morning.

Also, I would use the leftover Domesboro soak by soaking papertowels in it and putting them in a sandwich bag to use as wipes for future diaper changes. The Domesboro really works great to get rid of diaper rash asap but call your pharmacy to make sure they have it!

My son had horrible diaper rash and from time to time still does. He is 2 yrs old now. When he was a baby we would always follow these rules when changing him: Don't use wipes, use wet paper towels or cloths. Make sure his skin is completely dry before applying any cream - we used a hairdryer on cool shot to dry him quick. Then apply a clotrimazole anti-fungal cream followed by a diaper rash cream. You can stop the antifungal when the rash subsides. If the rash comes back and it's bad (as it always was with our son) then get Domesboro soaks at the pharmacy. It's used for burns but if you follow the package instructions, mix it with water, and soak some 4 x 4 gauze pads in it and then apply it dripping wet to the area, then hold it there with a clean diaper for 20 minutes (we did longer) it works really great. It's very soothing too. After you remove them just dry the area with a dryer and apply diaper rash ointment. My son loved these soaks because it provided immediate relief! Good luck!

My son had the same problem, we went to the doctor several times only to be frustrated with more creams. Finally we changed the diaper brand, turns out he suddenly became allergic to Huggies.  Its worth a try to buy a different brand of diapers just to see...

Everytime my daughter gets a rash, we use Lotramin, the athletes foot cream. It gets rid of yeast infections. I usually get the store brand like Walgreens. She has done the same thing with it breaking open, and when you put cream on, it doesn't stick to that spot. I always use baby powder that has corn starch in it. It keeps some of the moisture away. You can also use just plain corn starch. I agree with the lady before me. No wipes, it just burns their little bottom. I hope this helps.

hi...i used to have the same problem with my daughter.  i tried giving her yogurt but it didnt' help.  all the zinc creams promised results but nothing really worked.  finally, i spoke to my daughter's doctor and he just said that she had very acidic urine...he prescribed 'Nystatin' cream and poof, the rash was gone!  it was only when my daughter was finally out of diapers that the rash completely disappeared for good.  hope this info helps.

My youngest had kidney reflux an had to be on antibiotics for 18 months. During that time we had many yeast ifection diaper rashes.We found that  Vusion creme (perscription) worked great along with putting baking soda in the bath water. It helps calm the skin to help premote the healing processes. I also did not use wipes while the rash was open and bleeding, we used wet paper towels....no soap no burning alot less screaming.

Wow, does this bring back recent memories. My little guy had tons of problems with yeast and just plain diaper rash. The best ever remedy requires 3 steps and a little time with each diaper change. 1st - use frangrance free wipes to clean the bum every time even after urine. 2nd Apply Mylanta or Maalox (yes antacid) with a Qtip and let it dry. 3rd - after it is dry apply Aquaphor (available in the lotions area, comes in a jar). You will see a difference right away. Also the more time you can let him roam without a diaper the better, you can get 'chucks' from the hospital to lay out and let him roam.

Two simple things done together work very well: several baths a day using mild soap on the area, then letting your baby air-dry running around for at least ten minutes...then use baby cornstarch only under his diaper......NOT baby powder. Be very sure you use cool baby wipes every time to get up any/all residual urine (the yeast FEEDS on it).....

WE HAVE FOUND THAT THE BEST THING IS CALLED TRIPLE PASTE. YOU CAN GET IT AT WALGREENS & I THINK CVS FROM THE PHARMACY AND YOU DO NOT NEED A PRESCRIPTION BUT, THEY MAY HAVE TO ORDER IT. WE USED IT FOR EVERY DIAPER CHANGE AND INSTEAD OF WIPES USE A WARM WASH CLOTH. YOU SHOULD SEE A DIFFERENCE IN ONE APPLICATION. ALSO I AM NOT SURE WHAT DIAPERS YOU ARE USING BUT, SOMETIMES THAT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE. WITH MY DAUGHTER I COULD USE PAMPERS AFTER THE NEWBORN STAGE BUT, MY SON I COULD  ONLY USE HUGGIES SUPREME.:)  I HOPE THIS HELPS & THAT YOUR LITTLE ONE FEELS BETTER SOON. :)  STACY BENNETT-PORT ST LUCIE FLORIDA

the best creme i used on my son was canestan or its medical name is chlortriamazole its fantastic and try not to put his nappy on him i mean it may be messy but you really need to let the air get to it to allow it to dry out and the creme is anti fungaland works well the other thing i used a few times was metanium it looks like your appliying plaster or concrete haha but it is a fantastic barrier creme and works wonders to promote healing underneath it. hope this helps xxx
