Hi, i have a 5 year old boy who has been waking up in the night with pain in one of his legs?????

My son been telling me for about a year now that is legs are hurting him and I've been telling him that it is growning pains but I'm worry because its getin worser and I have had too buy him a pram! Iam hopping the doctor are right that it is growning pains Or is it something else,?! I have made another appointment too see the doctor again and they keep sayin he will be alright with some calpol. What else can I do?!

Get him to a bone specialist. My 5 year old nephew was doing a similar thing for a year and it was juvenile arthritis. I am not trying to scare you but better safe than sorry. Tell your primary that you want him/her to refer your son to a specialist in children's bone development. and don't take no for an answer. You are the parent and many doctors get their feelings hurt if we don't take their word for it, but it is up to you to protect your son.

Well, my 5yr old daughter has been complaining of pain in the left foot right about the top of her metatarsals, always in the middle of the night every couple of weeks she is crying about the pain she's feeling. What's could this be? By the time morning comes she's okay, but ALWAYS cmplains of this pain at the wee hrs of the morning after she's been asleep a few hrs.

5, doctors have done blood tests and x/rayed his arm but could not find anything wrong they said its growing pains and he will grow out of it but im not convinced

hi katie
my 6 yr. old son has been complaining since a few months of a pain in his legs and feels very relieved after a massage. he mostly complains at night whilst sleeping . i too was told about growing pains but sometimes its also a lack of calcium and i have been giving him calcium supplements. but do check with your dr before you start anything new cause we are vegetarian and that to could be one of the reasons.

my daughter has been having pain in her left leg for about 6 months. i took her to her doctor who told use to go to Duke's Children Hospital. I took her and there is no such thing as growing pains. they gave me exercises to do with her at night and told me if it didnt help to bring her back. so far she has only had one episode since i took her about 2 + months ago.

I have taken my son to the er a couple of times for it. the first time they told me growing pains. second time, I said, "Look. We were here just a couple of months ago. This time it's both legs, not just one, and he couldn't even stand on them". Well, the doc did a small little blood test and it came back as MYOSITIS. It is swelling and pain in the muscles from a virus. (He did have a cold at the time.) Motrin is the best they recommended since it helps with both things- swelling and pain.

did he get vaccinated in that leg to your recalection???? It could be a low grade infection, be forsefull with your DR. My friend a nurse and I held down her 6yrold for his vac. and he couldent use that leg for 6weeks or more, I cant remember what was wrong but it wasnt growing pains

Growing pains would be in both legs and would not continue for a period of 2 yrs. I have 3 boys who all go through growing pains regularaly... It usually starts in the spring when children tend to grow the most. I would certainly take him in to an orthopedic dr to get an expert opinion.

Definitely get a second opinion. Try feeding him more bananas. Sounds silly but it helps to calm muscle cramping and spasms!

My son started getting those when he was 5. He out grew them. He even had cramps on the bottom of his feet. I think growing pains had to be it. He went thru tha off and on for about a year. Nothing after that. My other 2 boys never complained about getting feet or leg pains

Maybe you need to see a pediatric orthopedic doc. It sounds like maybe something in his growth plates??

Hi Katie, one of my son's has been getting constant pain in only one of his legs. He doesn't seem to wake at tnight from the pain though. This has been going on for roughly 18months. I have taken him to our family Dr, to which she tells me it is 'probably' growing pains or it could be a hairline fracture or maybe something else, then sent me on my way! The Dr told me I shougld come back if the pain is always in the same spot as it could be something more serious. needless to say I'm getting a second opinion. Goodluck with your little one.

As a mother you know when something is not right with your child. Get a second opinion if you are not satisfied. If all is well then great, you kow you have done the best for your child. Be persisant with the care of your child as they rely on us mums & dads to fight for their health.

My son is almost 15 yrs old now but when he was small he also had pains in his lower limbs. His pains occurred while he slept also. A young child is growing and changing constantly and growing pains occur. I talked to his doctor and he also chalked it up to growing pains and said he'd out grow the pain once the body's growth pattern caught up with each other. I didn't want to drug him up and bananas didn't helped.

The best help I used was heat. I didn't want to use a heating pad for I was afraid of burning him. I would also rub the area but this also caused additional pain. While I was visiting my in-laws, my father in-law was heating his shoulder with a rice pack that his PT had given him. I made a home made version of it for my son. I took a tube sock and filled it with rice then had sown the opening shut. The rice packe was placed in the microwave and heated - only enough time to make it warm - about a minute. The tube sock was placed on the area of the leg that caused my son's pain. This area was usually located around the ankles or knees. The heat relaxed the muscles and tendons and he slept throughout the night. I didn't worry about burning my son's legs for once the rice pack is heated it immediately begins to cool down as it heats up the leg. The rice pack is still here and has been used for many purposes. Growing pains have occurred several times throughout my son's life. The muscles and tendons are catching up with his bone growth.

Injures due to athletics are probably ahead in your future too. The rice pack has been used in our house for athletic injury too. Socks come in pairs and both pairs were used. I purchased 1 box of rice and split the contents between the pair of socks. This leaves enough room so the sock may lay on the body area - leg, arms, hips, shoulders, etc. - without easily falling off.

Hope this helps as much as it did for me!! I'm still using rice packs.

My son is also 5 and has been having the same problem since he waa 4. The doc. said nothing to worry about growing pains so what we did was get lotionout and rub it in when his leg would hurt and called it medicne and it made him feel better and in return made me feel better i could help him.

My son who is now 6 1/2 has had these pains also..they only happen at night when he is resting..he has been having them since he was about 3 or 4...i have brought him to the pediatricans office and even an orthopedic doc for another look. these are commonly found as "growing pains". It can last for quite awhile. I know my son likes it when i rub his legs when he has his. i would try to give him a pain reliever when he wakes up with these pains..i know that really works for my son.

Hi Katie,
I went through this with my son when he was 2 years old. Extra magnesium in his diet did help, but every now and then the pain would come back. He would wake up in the middle of the night sobbing that his legs hurt. As he grew older the pain would also happen at the end of a very active day. I took him to my podiatrist and he was diagnosed as having pronated feet that was causing his leg pain. He now wears specially made inserts inside his shoes to correct the problem and he hasn't had the pain since. He knows very well in fact that he needs his inserts because he is very diligent about making sure he has them on every day before going outside because he knows the pain that will happen without them.
I would definitely suggest taking him to either a orthopedist or a podiatrist and get an opinion from them. My pediatrician also said the same thing that it was growing pains but my gut told me otherwise.

Hi Katie,
I know you've had a million suggetions already, so here's another one. My 5 year old daughter has been recently diagnosed with coeliac disease. She would often wake up in the night crying with pain in her left foot and leg. A simple blood test will tell you if your son may have it. Fortunately Sophie's pain has gone now she is gluten free. The gluten was poisioning her system ,resulting in the constant pain.

I also say get a second opinion. A friends son had something similar . After many trips to the dr and being told she was paranoid it turned out to be a cyst at the top of her sons thigh bone!!! Thankfully he's ok now.. Trust your own instincts!!

Katie: This is not going to be much help but my neighbor had the same thing with her daughter and they thought it was just a 'thing' she was going through and as long as she would put lotion on her legs she said it made her feel better....but it ended up being something much worse - I cannot remember what the actual term was but you should get it checked out! I want to say it was a nerve being pinched or something. I wish I couod remember --- but my advice to you would be to go to a doc or a chirop. Good Luck!

Growing Pains, between the ages of 5 and nine for my oldest two children. Donaven's was always his left leg (or the bone in his left leg - so he would say) and Deven's was his arms. I used to give them a little tylenol and ibuprofen for kids, then give the hurting limb a massage through warm towels to help ease the muscles and heat the bones up.



There is not much in this world that is worse than watching someone you love and care about going through any kind of pain.

my son has had the same problem over the past two years, but i have not taken him to a doctor, however after reading perhaps i will!!i just put it down to growing pains.if it happens i give my son a massage and some heat or ice, and panadol an it seems to calm him!!!! it only happens once in a while

hey girl, since u are white, i won't say it could be sickle cell disease because that is mostly among the black and other races. i've been reading about those pains lately, and all i hear is that its growing pains. But i would take him to the doctor for a thorough examination. Hopefully, nothing to be so worried about. Cheers

My son has 5 years, sometimes he has the same problems, after a visit by the doctor she explained that some tishues grow faster than bone or oposite, that couses pain. If the masage and heating does not help I use Calpol in small dose(paracetamol)

it is just growing pains my daughter is 4 and she gets them every once in awhile.there is nothing really the doctor can already asked and looked it up online it is normal.when it happens i just give my daughter a leg massage for a little while and she is usaully good it not i give her alittle tylenol or motrin.

I would ask my doctor about the possiblility of Leg Cap Perthes. I had that as a child and my symptoms were the same as your son. I am fine now, no problems at all. Back then they made me wear a brace for one year but I think they don't treat it the same anymore. In fact, they may not treat it at all and just wait for it to go away on it's own. I would still want a diagnosis if I were you. My kids had growing pains, but they were always in both legs, not just one.

My son does the same thing. he actually wakes up screaming at times or he will be playing and tell me that it hurts. He had XRAYS done when he was 3 and it showed nothing. He also had an issue where he's be walking and cross his legs for no reason and trp himself. The doctors told me it is just a lack of coordination on that part and the pain is caused by the stretching of the cartiledge form growing. When he does cry out I just give him some tylenol or motrin and he doesn't complain anymore. If it continues, I would see a specialist as recommended by Debora. I hope this eased any concerns

i say go with your gut the 2nd opinoin visit to a bone dr may be a good idea since i have a bone condition called brittle bone .kids can have what they call a stress brake and you will not even know it ,or he may have pulled a muscle while playing .children can have ra .so seeing a specailest can not hurt then you know for your peace of mind .
