i have alot of hip pain and leg cramps and i asked my docter and he told me oh its normal... ur pregnent and well.. that really doesnt help when he always says that no matter what i ask, but i guess pregnancy is one of those things where it is normal but im at the point were i dont sleep all night beacuse of these pains and they just wount go away. so if anyone knows of how to make the pain go away or even lessen the pain would b great... and one more thing somtimes when my legs hurt i cral up into a ball and when i wake up im on my tummy, is that safe for my baby or should i try to stop doing that?

For the leg cramps, they can be caused by dehydration or low potassium or both. Make sure you drink plenty of water, I know like you don't pee enough when pregnant, but anyway... drink water, eat a few extra bananas and see if that helps. For the hip pain, I'm all for the body pillow, but you might also want to think about seeing a chiropractor. I didn't do this with my first child, but saw one monthly during my second pregnancy and it made a huge difference! I was much more comfortable and had a lot less hip and back pain. Good luck! Hope this helps.

from a grt grama and mom of 4girls, maybe this will help the back and legs: try laying on your back with your legs elevated on the seat of the chair like this:____//~~ on the floor(carpet) for afew min. every few hrs. As far as the tummy sleeping, this is probably due to the back pain . and probably depends how far along you are in your pregnancy. I didn't want to if my baby was in her 2nd tri- mest. But better check with dr. about yours. My sister in law, retired obgyn nurse helped me with this. She is a great source of info. for moms.

I'm sorry, but your doctor is an idiot. I'd find another doctor or at least get a second opinon. Better yet find yourself a chiropractor. Mine saved me from being crippled because of pain. I've been diagnosed with fibromialgia and I take no medication. I've had my first child at 33 and he is 3 now and is incredibly healthy. I wouldn't recommend taking aspirin as it might upset your stomach and it causes ulcers and could cause problems with the placenta. Again I recommend getting a chiropractor, and seeing about getting a midwife a lot of insurance will cover both of these type of docotors. You'll find you'll be happy and healthy and so will your baby.

I don't think it's normal to have so much pain you can't sleep. I do know the doc told me cramp is a sign of not drinking enough water but I would not let the hip pain go you can get a corset to help keep some baby weight from them do you go to a clinic or just the doctor?

I would try eating bananas to help with the cramps!

It could be because the baby is laying on an area with those nerves. When I was pregnant with my first, I could not use my hands. I felt crippled and had pain also. I was told "that's normal for YOU! It did not make me feel better but it was true. If you were not pregnant and had this problem I would wonder if you have a potassium deficiency. I would wake up screaming with charlie horses going up and down my leg. The only thing that helped was taking potassium. Good luck to you and the baby!

My midwife put me on a liquid calcium/magnesium supplement and it really helped. I think it is better than milk because you would have to drink ALOT of milk to equal the calcium in this supplement. Babies are growing bones and the calcium is getting sucked out of your bones!

Get a prenatal yoga DVD or take classes and take extra calcium. The Calcium will help SO much with the cramping and the yoga will give your hips relief. Walking a mile or more a day will help so much also. I was told by my midwife that a mama who walks 5 miles a day will have a really toned uterus and her baby will come easily. I walked as much as possible and did yoga and I had a 2 hour labor all natural. Congratulations! Remember to enjoy your pregnancy it is a very special time and very temporary.

Leg cramps could be lack of water, or potassium, Bananas are good but avacados have more, make yourself some guak and eat your heart out :) Also as far as your hip pain, I am guessing your hips are widening, which is normal, but doesn't make it any easier. Depending on where the pain is, will depend on the cause. I would suggest you find a chripractor that deals with pregnant women. I had a ton of hip pain and that along with massage where 2 things that helped a TON!!!! There are a lot of great stretches that can be done on you to help also. I do massage for a living and I stretch my mommies that come in and they all love it!!

About the Tylenol, I know that you do not want to take anything for the babies sake but try and remember that being in pain causes stress and stress cause cortisol to rise in you and in the baby. Having a miserable pregnancy and not enjoying this precious time does not help the baby either. You have to take care of you. And you need to find a doctor who listens and does not judge or put you down. I don't know your pain level, But mine was extreme. I had to have help both with medication and physical thearapy and massage. I felt really bad at first needing meds but realized that my doctor would not give anything dangerous and how much more relaxed I was had to be good for the baby too.

The amount of calcium in the 2 glasses of milk you are drinking truly is not enough...including the pre-natal vitamin amount....The baby sucks calcium right out of you, and if they are not getting enough, they will start taking from your bones and teeth. Also as your Dr if you could have Seperated Symphisis Pubis. I have that and it hurts like a bitch,,..you just want to make sure you do not deliver on your back or it could make it MUCH worse!!! It is where the cartilidge that is holding your pelvisd together starts tearing away. It is suppose to soften when pregnant in order for your pelvis to expand.,,.,.but sometimes it tears. Good luck....and too much calcuim will not hurt...too little will.

Sounds like your not having fun! If your diet is healthy and you have tried the banana and calcuim eatting then you could be suffering with a trapped nerve. You do not say how pregnant you are? I ended up bed ridden when I was 6 months pregnant due to a split pelvis brought on by hormonal changes during pregnancy. I was in absolute agony when walking with pains in my legs and lower back, all the hospital could offer me was a pelvis back brace which moved the baby up and took the weight off my pelvis. All I can say is a cushion between my knees at night helped and once I had had the baby all went back tonormal within a week. Phew what a relief!!

I had that really bad and towards the end, could barely walk even during the day. I came to find out it was my Sciatic Nerve. The baby must have been putting a lot of pressure on it and even though it's in your back, you feel it in you hips and legs. Try to sleep towards the side as much as possible to keep the baby off your back. Try heating pad on your back ( I know it's in your hip and leg and it probably feels like there is no way it's your back but it probably is). Massages before bed maybe too. Hope this helps.

I would definitely try taking potassium and getting a body pillow. Your leg pain could also be due to water retention (mine was). I had to sleep with a hot water bottle between my feet every night to deal with the pain. It might have made my swelling worse, I don't know. I also think I remember that Tylenol is safe during pregnancy. You could check on that. I also had symphisis pubis dysfunction (pelvic girdle pain) which is when the front of your pelvis splits where the cartilage is and it was impossible to walk at times. Another thing that helped a lot was massage. I was really angry that no one told me how bad pregnancy hurts (everyone focuses on the pain of labor, but a few hours of pain is so much better than weeks and months not knowing when the pain will end) and how totally helpless you can become. I was eventually induced when I was nearly a week overdue. I was at the point where I was going to have to get a bedpan because I could not change position at all without horrible pain. I also had to have physical therapy afterwards. Don't let anyone tell you its just aches and pains. Pregnancy can be really debilitating for some women, no matter how healthy you were beforehand.

Claire is half right, leg cramps can be due to low potassium, and also low calcium. I was getting such bad charlie horses at night I wasn't able to sleep. My midwife told me to up my calcium intake...so I aked my pharmisist which one and how much...I am on Calcitrate 2 tabs twice daily, and it helped unbeliebably. Your Dr sounds like a jerk face...yeah you have aches and pains during pregnancy but they should not be blown off. Maybe seek another professional???

My doctor told me that leg cramps were due to a lack of potassium.
He suggested eating a banana before bed and I must say it really did seem to help me

U need to drink more milk. It will help u to sleep. I will take aspirin for all my sickness during pregnancy but just i pill will do. There will be more pain because of pregnancy but just bear it all. This will go away after u the birth of ur child. Do some stratching and exercise moderately to make u feel a little bit better. Don't sleep on ur stomach, it will not besafe for the baby. But take care of ur self ok.

Some pain is normal but if it gets extreme then you need to really push your doctor for help. I had debiltating Psoas (sp?) Muscle pain throughout my pregnancy. Which raidiated from the hip area. Had spasms, got stuck in the car and at the grocery unable to move. Ended up in Physical Thearapy for the last 4 months of pregnancy. It was horrible. If you cannot sleep or move get tough and demand help from your doctor. This really is not as uncommon as they lead you to believe.

By the way, it was all worth it in the end!!

Good Luck!!

I'm only 11 weeks but I'm starting to get the hip/leg pain as well. Go out and buy a body pillow, in fact they even make pillows for pregnant women that dip and curve, perfect for your growing body. I sleep with 3 pillows though... one for my head of course, then one for my arms (I hug it) and one for between my legs. It really helps with any pain I'm having. Also... I can't say this for sure, but I don't think laying on your belly will harm your baby... it just might be uncomfortable for you is all. So if you sleep that way, that means your body finds it comfortable.
