I have a little girl and has been in daycare since she was 6 months old. I've found it really go for her development. I'm now pregnant with my second child and I'm wondering if a nany is the way to go for both. Reading some of the replies to your question has made me wonder.

I am a big fan of licensed home child care. I had one years ago and when we recently adopted 2 babies I tried to keep continuity by keeping them at the daycare they were already going to and they were constantly sick. I switched them to a home center and they are healthier and get more attention than if they were in a center. It takes a little work to find the right one but once you do it is sooooo very worth it! Good luck!

I have worked in daycare and as a teacher. I am now a government employee. Both my girls are in daycare. A good LICENSED daycare is a really good option. The two posters above may have worked in a different setting than the ones my children attend. A Licensed daycare is inspected often. There are degree and training requirements for staff (depending on your state). If you can afford a good quality Nanny, that is great. However, I am more sceptical of an individual, alone with my child, than a daycare full of people to see what is going on. Our current daycare has cameras and I love that. I can check in on them whenever I want. The best advice I can give, nanny or daycare, is do your homework. Check references, check out all your options and then go with your gut. Mothers Intution is powerful. Hope you find a situation that makes you and baby very happy!

I would defintitely go with a nanny. I worked in a very expensive church associated day care center that was considered to be the best in the area. What I saw behind the scenes was frightening. The kids were constantly being yelled at and called names, they were left in time out for 30 minutes at a time (3 yr olds!), kids were put in time out alone on the potty if they wet their pants, kids were often left unsupervised, etc. One day they were served milk that had soured because the teacher didn't want to be inconvenienced. The parents had no idea what went on when they weren't there. When parents were around the staff became warm and loving. No one will love your children as much as you, if you have to go back to work having your kids with one person you know and trust and trust is the ONLY way to go.

Hey!! My name is Christina. I myself have worked in daycare, and had my children put in them. I would recommend a nanny, if you can afford one. One reason is that, the majority of daycares do not have video cameras in the classrooms (the one i worked at did), and therefore, anything can happen with you being none the wiser. Another reason is that daycare centers have a lot of employees going in and out of them. Whereas with a nanny, you are assured of one person being with your child. They don't have to keep bonding over and over. It's a matter of feeling secure. Also, if the nanny is in your home environment, you could set up cameras as well as make your child feel more comfortable, because he/she knows the area better. The one drawback, in my opinion, is lack of socialization. But, your nanny could arrange playdates or something to make up for that.

I have been a nanny for 10+ years and have worked in a daycare facility as well. Now as a mother myself, I would go nanny! For younger infants they just don't get the care and attention need in a daycare. I feel it is well worth the extra money. You can always send them to daycare when baby is a little older for the interaction.

If you have more than one kid, hiring a nanny will (generally) be cheaper than daycare :)

For 12-18 months, a nanny might be more beneficial, providing you are able to financially afford one. There is a huge advantage to one on one care, as well as any light housekeeping services you might be paying for. But I have to agree that by a certain age, (and every baby is very different) kids needs to socialize with their peers. Babies become so attached to their caregivers that separation anxiety is normal. Long term nanny care for several years might not be in the child's best interest. Oh sure, a nanny can arrange for park outings and playdates. But it's not the same thing as a daily routine in a day care facility. Also know that there are some high quality child care providers out there and excellent facilities. Not all daycares deserve a bad rap! Good luck in your decision.

During the first year of my daughter's life we did the nanny thing and it was great. She got the care she needed, the one on one attention she needed when she needed it, etc. The nanny would even take her to doctor appointments if we needed. It turned out though for us it wasn't worth keeping it going when she turned one because it was more expensive then most of the daycares in our area. So we switched her to the daycare, saved us a chunk of money for the same services the nanny provided plus she got to interact with older children instead of one or two children the same age as her. Plus with the daycare we only pay for the days we use them instead of a weekly salary that doesn't change even if we don't use their service.
