What traditions are you keeping from you childhood and what new ones are you bringing to your families. Traditions are very important- It bonds your family and does not have to be expensive to make memories for your children.
I am a Lamaze teacher and always encourage the moms I work with to begin making their own family traditions~

I'm sad this year...the kids are going to be with their Dad till Boxing Day morning...no letting them fall asleep in front of the tree, then carrying them to bed, no cinnamin buns for breakfast...I have to hurry them straight to my Mom's for her Christmas dinner...Christmas at my house is going to have to wait till the 27th. :(

Our new tradition is tracking Santa on Norad.
The childrens picture with Santa every year is the old tradition.

We have several traditions but my favorite is Christmas Eve. The kids open two presents every year before heading off to bed. One is pajamas and the other is a new ornament that kind of represents them from the year. They add it to the tree before heading off to bed. They are fun to look back on year after year and reflect.

theres the dressing of the tree - with home baked mince pies, xmas music and an xmas movie.
Then on xmas day there is the morning with just the parent and child breakfast and pressie time, then lunch with our second family and dinner with our actual family. Always a buffet lunch and roast dinner with home made xmas pud and custard. Our xmas doesnt vary much year to year - but we love what we do so much we would be happy for it to never change anyway:)

I began making scarves for the holidays three years ago because I was unemployed and just got tired of the same old thing. My list has increased and my scarf making has really improved. I believe something from the heart is better than something from Macy's. And besides that, it is very cost effective.

Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas are the only three days that I keep the tradition of my family going strong. I always go to my aunt and uncle's house for Christmas Eve and do a white elephant with extended family (always a blast). And after that, we go to my dad's house to read The Christmas Story...kinda.... First my dad reads the whole thing, then we go around in a circle and each say the next word in the story (so my Dad says "Twas" and then I say "the" and then my mom says "night" etc....). That's great.
On Christmas morning this year, it will be a little different because we'll celebrate our own little Christmas at home first, and then hop on over to my dad's for the rest of the day. Ah the memories....
I also go to his house every Saturday for dinner, but that one is a little more flexible since it's every week. But Saturday BBQs are a great tradition and a great way to see Grandpa and Nana each week!

On Christmas eve we as a family go out to friends, have fabulous food (each take a special dish we're good at making) and each take a present Then we open one present each going down from oldest to youngest. The oldest has to stick with his present. Going down in age, each can look at what every older person has opened and decide whether he wants their present or his own. If he wants say Granddad's, he gives Granddad whatever he opened, and takes Granddad's instead. Right at the end, depending on the mood and the ages, we will let the oldest choose anybody at all's present!
Til my daughter had a daughter of her own I bought her an advent calendar to open from the 1st December. This is the first year I haven't! (She's 30!)

new PJ's on christmas eve and a new outfit for Christmas day. Also decorate the tree on Dec 1st and have a special dinner on that day.

My tradtion is every year my son has a photo with santa then afterward we will go out for lunch then to the park for a play :)

Every year since my oldest was born I have bought her a christmas dress ... I never had one but always wanted it so I buy her one every year and get her all dressed up to get her picture taken with Santa and now with my 1 year old I do the same ... My oldest looks forward to seeing what kind of dress I have picked out for her
