i make my baby food at home with fresh fruit and veggies. My concern is that the bannahs trun nasty brown after mushed and put in a container. how do i prevent that? anyother good made at home baby food appriciated

Good for you! I've homemade all of our son's meals since he started eating solids at 6 months. He is now 18 months and loves his Momma cookin! For the bananas I would suggest that you only make enough for one serving that way you avoid the browning of the bananas. Or you could use a bit of lemon or lime juice which will help keep the banana from going brown however it may make it too bitter for baby. When our son first started eating solids I would puree all different kinds of fresh fruits and veggies as well as beans. As our son got older I stopped pureeing and just cubed his food which is when we added meats and some dairy (around 8 months). Our son also loves casseroles of all kinds. His favorite is chicken and broccoli casserole. He also really enjoys homemade soups as well. Explore all foods and have fun with it! :)

LOL, it's true that the oxidization won't change the taste or harm the fruit, but for some reason my picky little girl wouldn't eat brown banana. It's like she knew.... but she's always been willing to eat slightly oxidized avocados. Weirdo! Anyway, it's great that you are making your own baby food, and I got some great ideas off of wholesomebabyfood.com too. Now that she's older (21 months) I've found the old classic "Feed Me, I'm Yours" to be invaluable. I just keep in mind some of the more recent updated rules on when to introduce which foods. Watching them learn to eat well is so much fun.

The change in color does not change the flavor, so if it is quicker to thaw than to mash on the spot...no big deal either way. One other thing you can do...mix it with plain organic yogurt...that is if your baby is old enough for it. I use to use that together also mixed with wheat germ,.,..,I would do the same with prunes and yogurt...I am just recommending becouse the yogurt has such good digestive bacteria for these little ones while they are starting on solids. I made my own baby food with my first one, and my 2nd is only 4 weeks old. I am going to make her baby food also...I loved doing it!! Have fun with it!

I do the same as the other ladies -- I just cut off a third of a banana at a time and leave the rest in the peel. Lime or lemon juice prevents oxidization, but you really shouldn't be giving your kid citrus until she's 12 months old.

And yes, wholesomebabyfood.com is fantastic. I tend to roast a lot of veggies and then blend until they're fine chunks, and then freeze them in ice cube trays. So far I've roasted parsnips, cauliflower, carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, asparagus and broccoli. Once they're used to it, you can start combining stuff. For supper tonight, Sam had mashed steak mixed with acorn squash, and some mashed roasted cauliflower with a tiny sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan. He loved it.

I've got cans of peaches and pears I'm planning on pureeing for my son (he just turned 4 months and we're gonna "dabble" with solids). There's a neat website with some great ideas called wholesomebabyfood.com that has some awesome ideas for homemade meals.

I just use what I need of the banana and leave the rest in the skin - when you use it again just get rid of the cm or so that has turned backish and the rest should be fine.

I only smashed the bananas right when they were going to be eaten. For a while we would share one and then they started eating the whole thing. Hope that helps.
