My daughter was the same way & i promise they grow out of it, every time is popped out she was screaming bloody murder!! when she used a bink we swaddled her as well she like to be wrapped extremely tight, im sure most mother would disagree but i put a folded up like burp cloth near her face so incase it fell out i wouldnt really fall & It worked pretty well & it never smothered her or anything obviously. she eventually gave up the bink & is now a thumb girl which is ok with me for the time being!! Good Luck!

I am very pro soothers, but if they make your life more difficult, you should consider cutting them out.

You could either put him to sleep with it, then let him cio when he wakes during the night. Or try to put him to sleep without. These frequent interruptions are not good for you or for him.

I personally disagree. I would not let a five month old cry it out. They are developing attachment at this age. They need to understand that their world is safe. They learn this by getting their needs met. They cry, we come and feed, sooth, clean .... over time they start to feel trust in this process and understand they are safe.

Soon he will be able to put the thing back in his own mouth

Can he sleep in a crib near you, so you can put it in his mouth without having to get up?

When he's awake help him figure out how to put it back in on his own. He should be able to grasp things in a fist now and open his mouth when he wants to put something in it.

I would let him cry it out. It will take time to train him to sleep without it and it will be really tough in the beginning not to run to him a sooth him by putting it back in his mouth (aslo some sanity will appear to become lost as a result of the sleep you will loose listening to him cry) but eventually he'll go back to sleep without it and you can probably put him to bed without it at that point.
