How affective is stirring/stripping the membranes?

Is there a difference between stripping membranes and stirring them? If so, what?

Also, How many of you have had your membranes stripped/stirred and how effective was it at getting labor started?

One more question, I've heard that after getting your membranes stirred there is a 95% chance that you will go into labor within 3 days. Is that true?

I am 1cm dialated and 70% effaced. Baby's head is "low enough to be felt easily".

I had my membranes stripped and started labor the next day -- about 30 hours later. I was three days past my due date, but my doctor said the procedure would definitely get things going. I don't know the difference between stripping and stirring (or if there is one), but it seemed to work for us.

I had my membranes stripped, and I had my baby 5 days later, but I was already a week overdue at the time. I don't think it did anything to start labor but it did make me loose my mucus cap. Also, it didn't hurt at all it was just a little uncomfortable.

My midwife stripped my membranes and nothing happened, with both my children, and all I got was a super uncomfortable and painful procedure.

I'd wait, and let nature take its course. Sounds like baby'll be here very soon anyways, I'd skip the unnecessary pain, and take a walk instead! :)

I had my membranes stripped with 2 of my pregnancies. It didn't start labor and it was a most uncomfortable experience.

i had my membranes stripped this morning, an it hurt so bad, made me wanna rethink bringing on labor, but it made me lose more of my mucus plug but ive been losing it in pieces like after sex, an then today, an i am already 2cm dilated, but other then that we are in the same boat because im almost 39 weeks, but i figured i would let you know it hurts like no other, unless you have already had a child then it was prolly nothing, but this is my first child an membrane stripping will never happen with me AGAIN. lol but maybe this helped a little bit, an i have been told beyond a million times to have sex an walk.

It was very effective for me with my 3rd child which was my only time having it done. I had it done at 2 pm, and I went into labor the next morning at 10 am. I was already overdue with her though, so take that into consideration. It's possible I would have gone into labor then anyway, but I was in labor 20 hours after having my membranes stripped.

I had my membranes stirred/stripped/swept 3 times, and my daughter was still 11 days late!! The last time they did it I was already 4cm dilated and the sack and head were bulging through my cervix. The doctor actually joked about how easy it would be for her to just break my waters then and there!! I begged her to do it, but instead she sent me home and I went into labour 2 days later.

I honestly didn't find it overly uncomfortable at all though. I guess it depends on the doctor.

I didn't find it effective I had them sripped or stirred awk before they wanted to induce 3x. They decided to induce which didn't either, finally decided to break the water 3 hrs later there she was

No difference between stripping/stirring membranes as far as I know. Apparently for about 70% of women, stripping the membranes has a good chance of putting them into labor within 3 days.

That being said... I was 3 cm dilated and 50% effaced for almost 4 weeks with my first daughter - had my membranes stripped something like 6 times, wound up being induced at almost 10 days overdue.

Guess it works for some and not for others. With my 2nd daughter, I was 2 cm dilated for about 3 weeks and baby's head was low enough to be felt easily, I went into spontaneous labor after my water broke at 9 days overdue.
