How do I get pregnant?

DH and I are ready to start trying for our second baby. 1st is 7 months now. But I am breastfeeding on demand and Ava doesn't like baby food still. We still feed every 3-4 hours overnight and I don't want to force her to wean or miss a meal until she is ready.

I have heard of things that help like raspberry leaf tea or vitamin B6 can work but these have their risks too when breastfeeding. Does anyone have any ideas? What did you do or had friends do that worked to start your period without fully weaning or forced weaning? I have not bled or had a period at all since conceiving Ava, not even spotting during pregnancy (aside from birth, you know).

You can ovulate before you begin bleeding again. Talk to your doctor to get the health clearance to begin carrying another baby:

"A study in the February 25,1999, New England Journal of Medicine reported a higher incidence of low birthweight and prematurity among babies conceived within six months
of a previous birth, compared to those conceived 18 to 23 months following the last baby. It makes good sense for a woman to let her body recover and replenish lost nutrients after having a baby. For instance, following delivery, the mother may be anemic because of the iron transferred to the baby and the placenta. In addition, a mother always loses blood during delivery. Having said that, some mothers may wish to have two babies close together for a variety of reasons. For those women I think attempting to get pregnant after a baby is 3 months old is probably safe, but may be psychologically daunting."

While I respect whatever choice you make might I recommend waiting until your little Ava is sleeping through the night before trying again? Just because pregnant ladies need as much rest and strength as possible and we all know how tiring it is to wake up in the night repeatedly. Just a thought.

On just a kinda funny note, if that Duggar woman can have 18 kids back to back, odds are those of us just wanting to crank out a couple should be just fine.

She actually just had her 19th!!

Damn! LOL

In my case my 1st is 22months & my 2nd is 3 months, we will be trying for a 3rd pretty soon. For one we are ready, but also my husband is in his late 40's so we want to have all of our kids ASAP because he is so worried about being a old daddy. I am also in my 30's and want to be done before I hit that magic 35 number. We are both physically, mentally, and financially ready. I'm ready, he's ready, and we are in good shape to provide for them. We are gonna try for 4.

I'm curious and in no offense to anyone, if your child is only 7 months, why are you rushing to have another one?

You absolutely don't have to wean and definitely don't need ur period in order to get pregnant again.

Check out this site: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/normal/fertil...

Here's an excerpt:
Do I need to wean to get pregnant?

Probably not. If you are still transitioning to full fertility (as discussed above), breastfeeding may affect the success of implantation. Once implantation is successful, breastfeeding should not affect a healthy pregnancy (see A New Look at the Safety of Breastfeeding During Pregnancy for more information). If your periods have come back and settled into a regular pattern, it is likely that breastfeeding is no longer affecting your fertility.

Many moms can conceive without deliberately changing their toddler's nursing patterns. There is no "magic" threshold of breastfeeding that will allow you to conceive -- every mother is different. Some moms need to stretch out nursing frequency and/or shorten nursing sessions to make it easier to conceive -- babies naturally do this themselves as they get older, so one of your options is simply to wait a bit.

Changes that are more abrupt tend to bring fertility back faster (e.g., cutting out one nursing session abruptly, rather than gradually decreasing nursing time at that session) --even if you continue to breastfeed a great deal-- this is why many mothers experience the return of fertility when their child sleeps through the night or starts solid foods. If you decide to make changes to your nursing pattern, the time of day that you make the change (e.g., cutting out or shortening a nighttime nursing session as opposed to a daytime nursing session) should not make that much of a difference. Current research indicates that nursing frequency and total amount of time at the breast per 24 hours are the most important factors, rather than the time of day that the suckling occurs.

A few moms do find it impossible to conceive while nursing, but this is not at all common.

Many mothers wonder whether breastfeeding will affect the reliability of pregnancy tests. It does not -- pregnancy tests measure the amount of the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in blood or urine, and hCG levels are not affected by breastfeeding. The developing placenta begins releasing hCG upon implantation; a pregnancy can generally be detected with a pregnancy test within 7-14 days after implantation.

Good luck and keep in mind you can get pg before your first period (happened to me).

Maybe its a sign that your body isn't ready to do for two children?

I breast fed my child & pumped, I got my 1st period at 11 months out. I got pregnant the next month. With no period it is gonna be awful hard. If you start to space your feeding farther apart at night you period might come back. When my baby started to sleep longer at night (6 hours) I got my period back. The only down side to getting my period is that my milk supply dried up pretty quick after that.

Once you do get your period go to www.askdramy.com I love this website. It lets you print out your most fertile days for the month & what's going on in your body. I would just plug in the 1st day of my last cycle and it would give me this really cool print out with all my most fertile days & when I should ovulate, it would even give me the date a urine preg test should be positive. I used it to get pregnant with both my girls. It was really helpful for my husband!

I think your probably going to have to switch her from breast to bottle and space your pumping farther apart to get pregnant. Good luck!

What about pumping during the day and give that milk at night? I know some women get their periods back after they stop the overnight sessions, however mine didn't come back until I completely stopped bfeeding.

You may have to try to start weaning if not having a cycle and you really want another one. Without ovulation you can't get pregnant. Without a cycle you can't ovulate. Sorry :( I don't know what else to tell you. Maybe you could go in and talk to your OB/Gyn and see what she has to say.

hmmm...i would think it will be a task to get pregnant if you havent bleed yet. though i am sure that it is possible. My son was sleeping through the night at 7 months and was on solids. If you continue to feed overnight and not start solids (my son didnt like them at first either but you do have to keep trying) she will always be waking up and expecting her bottle. my nephew still does this now and he is 18 months old!

The only thing i can suggest is to wean your little one and hope that you fall pregnant soon...hope this helps a little!
