how do I know my baby's getting enough breast milk?

My son is 6 months old and since the introduction of solids a month ago (he eats them 4 times a day now) and switching birth control pills a couple weeks ago (from the minipill to regular pills as my doc advised) I'm not the milk machine I used to be. I'm just worried about him getting dehydrated in the heat now. He doesn't nurse like he used to (he's more interested in everything else, even in a quiet room) and I've noticed over the last few days his diapers aren't as wet as they used to be. He still has 6-8 wet diapers a day, they're just not very wet. I'd rather not switch to formula if I can help it, but I want to make sure he's getting enough liquids. He's also drinking about 2 oz, if that, of watered down juice a day, but I know he still needs the nutrition from the milk.

Maybe you can pump to make sure he is getting the milk he needs? give it to him in a sippee cup (they say you can introduce these at 6 months) or however you give him the watered down juice. That way you make sure he is getting what he needs and you know your production is staying. If not I would find a lactation consultant in your area to help you. We have a breastfeeding support group in Cleveland that I go to 3 days a week and see one. They would be able to help and guide you through this. Hope this helps!

Ok, so I talked to a lactation consultant this morning and she suggested nursing him before I feed him, pumping after I nurse him, and eating oatmeal to boost my supply. She also said as long as he's peeing and gaining weight he's fine. So I will try those suggestions and see what happens. Thanks your help everyone!

give extra water in between feeds in the hot weather this is what the nurses say and as logn as he is gaining weight he is getting enough milk :) if you are worried you can always give a bottle of formula a day but only if you feel comfortable since you said you would rather not

I'm surprised you're on the pill while still nursing. My OB told me not to go back on the pill til after I was done breastfeeding my son

Go back to the minipill! Your doctor isn't thinking about your baby... The day I got on the "regular pill," I dried up... I called my doctor and she put me back on the mini. Also...pumping between feedings will help tremendously. Use sippy's with the juice/water and the pumped milk. If you're afraid of getting pregnant again, use a back-up method.
