there are movies on these big flights from germany now. we did it in may from Frankfurt to texas, with a 3 yr, 5 yr, and 4 month. the movies for kids were helpful, plus books, coloring, a few bigger toys like a car or doll. remember to bring snacks because even if your kids will eat plane food, there is nothing for them between the meal times. also, i find a camelback is useful and you can fill it up after you go through security to take on the plane.

Our grandson is 5 so we only had . We chose to make this trip with no electronic support other than what was provided on the airplane. We took new things for him most from the dollar store or a museum gift shops discount section. A slinky, modeling clay, bendable figures, a magnetic wand man's face, all kept him well occupied. A camera for him to take pictures with, we have lots of cloud pictures, Earphones that would fit him to plug into the seat of the plane. A couple of favorite soft things from home to help with sleeping and of course books to read and to do activities in. Pocket Parcheesi game was a hit too. I made this trip alone with him, took some snacks but also allowed him to get food on the plane which was another diversion.
It was a long trip but we both got to sleep some. Plus chewing gum for take off and arrivals, as well as things to drink. Find airline crews are very attentive and helpful in 98% of the cases.
Traveling with a 1 year old is often easier as they will often sleep more. We used a decongestant with with our grandson when he was about that age to help with his ears, plus it helped him to sleep. One dose before each take off if there was a long lay-over anywhere. This seemed to help alot when he was little.

My boys are now 6 and 7, but have made the international London-Charlotte flight for several years now. Pack your laptop with their favorite movies, bring some board books and a new coloring book/crayons. Definitely sippy cups and some figurines (my boys love action figures but something like a polly pocket would work for girls. Good luck. They'll probably do great!

If you have a leapster for your 5 yr old that's always great because you can switch games when they get bored.

Pack a selection of small items that can be introduced one at a time when things get touch. take them for a walk up and down the plane every hour. depending on what your children are interested in. At 5 my son was really into planes so we used the time to learn all about the plane we were on. My girls used to like activity type books. Depending on the time of day you fly ensure you have supplies to let the 1 year old sleep. Also take items to help with any ear problems.

If you ring a head some airlines will let you have the front seats which often have more room so the children have a bit more space.

Good luck :0)

great response by Sharon Grey. Just wanted to add that you have to have the headphones. The last flight I was on with my kids I brought a portable DVD player and they would only let us have it on if we used the headphones, period. That made it difficult since my son didn't want to use them but it was our only option. Good luck.

We packed all kinds of non messy dry foods, cheerios, fruit, tried to limit the sugar stuff. A little nighttime cold formula - ours was a 13 hour flight - 18 counting the connecting flights - and we thought he might not be able to fall asleep due to the newness/excitement of it all.

sippy cups - to help with ear popping. Check with the airline to see if they will provide filtered water & milk for the kids in flight.

Toys, portable dvd player HEADPHONES! No one wants to hear your kid watching toy story for the 10th time.

Coloring books - get those "magic" coloring books that only need one pen and the colors appear. Felt & Stickum books, you move the characters on the pages for the story line - don't count on having all the pieces when you land.

IF you have a laptop - get an extended life battery and load it with preschooler games. Don't forget the headphones!
