If anyone has advise on how I can get my 4 year old to concentrate on his ABC's. He likes to play games when I try to work with him. I am about to get an oursider to sit down with him so maybe he will work with them. Not sure where to go from here. He needs to learn them but struggles. He is great with Shapes, colors, matching, ect... but not ABC's. He like to play games with his numbers too but he can atleast count pretty good. If anyone has any idea's I would love to hear them. Thanks, Kristi

Try Starfall.com My boy managed to teach himself the ABCs off of it. And it's totally free.

I don't get the point of teaching ABCs because it really doesn't help them learn to read. I teach my daughter the sounds each letter makes but I don't tell her the name of the letter. Kids who learn the ABCs tend to have a hard time reading because some letters don't make the same sound as what they start with. For example, I knew a little girl who had the hardest time with the word cat. She learned her ABCs and C sounds like "see". So she saw the word "cat" and said "sat". But if you teach them the phonetics first they learn to read easier.

BTW, he's four so making him "work" doesn't really work. It has to be a game or he just won't do it. Make it fun, Mom!

well for the ABC"s and 123's I just put up a poster of them and let my daughter come to it and then when she show's the interest in it we talk about it and go over them I also got the whinie the Phoo Learning with phoo abc's and 123's DVD"s that we watch and that seems to work too but I don't push her to do anything I let her make the move to learn them

Turn alphabet time into "game time" there are plenty of alphabet games out there that you can buy, or you can make up your own. Does he like singing the alphabet song? My son loved singing the alphabet song early, so that really helped when it came time for him to recognize the letters. I would also start with one letter at a time, and make it a big deal, for example, Monday's can be "'A' day and you can eat things that begin with the letter A, he can trace the letter A in paint (or Pudding, it's really fun for kids). I hope this helps! I know every kid learns at a different pace, don't get discouraged! =)

Make it a game.

Perhaps he is too young to study. So make it a game and not 'work'.

Any outside help is a great idea. But if he is heading to Pre-K, he will probably learn it there and that's that? Kids can learn so much from their peers.

Also, rewards seem to be a great motivator for kids. Set up a rewards chart or something like that. Be sure to reward baby steps. If the goal is set too high, it will seem unattainable to him. Break it down into little peices.
