How do you know when your child is ready to be home alone?

My daughter is 11, I have left her by herself while running to the store. She has rules that she has to go by, like not answering the door to ANYONE, and if someone does come to the door she has to call me from her cell. I had a parent to tell me that she was to young and that she would never leave her 14yr old at home alone, but what age do you let your kids grow up???

I dont think there is a set answer, it all depends on the child, if he/she can responsible and follow the rules then its ok.
