I found that asking my boys to leave the room when the started name calling was enough to stop it as most of the arguments were for my benefit to score points on each other. When they started to row I threw them both out the room and told them to come back when they could be civil. As the lounge, at that time was the only room with a tv, they soon modified their behaviour and the bickering stopped.

The only way to change a behavior is to understand why they are doing the behavior ... it meets some need somehow. Figure out what need is being met, find a better way for them to get that need met, and teach them to do that.
For example, and I am not saying this is the reason ... let's say that wehn they call each other names, they end up getting a lot of attention from you as you attempt to make them stop. Let's say attention is what they want.
If you were to stop giving attention for name calling, but give tons of attention for nice talk, kind conversation ... they would do more of that and less name calling.
