My 2&1/2 year old suck his thumb. How do I get him to stop? It is already mis-shaping his mouth..

hmmm.. I know the hot sauce won't work he likes it..I am unwilling to put deodrant on his thumb ew...could make him sick. anything like a sock he'll either suck through or pull off.. I'll be asking the pediatrician or our dentist for help too... any other ideas?

I just keep pulling my kids hand out of her mouth....bugging her enough till she doesnt do it...she hides to do it sometimes....but then cant be bothered to make the effort and stops..it takes a long time and a lot of patience. I tried putting something she doesnt like the taste of...that wouldnt hurt her ofcourse, but she'd suck through anyway! I couldnt bring myself to put hot sauce..and dont know if deodrant might upset her stomache...i also tried covering her hand with a sock or some sort of material, it kept her up for a while and worked...maybe that might work..i dont know! every kids different! good luck with whatever method! hope anything works!

i sucked my thumb til I was 13 my parents eventually stopped me by putting a tube on my arm overnight so I couldn't bend my elbow and therefore couldn't get my thumb in my mouth

Something that I used was hot sauce or deoderant. Give that a try and that may work.

One good way is smear on something that he really hates the taste of and after a couple of times of tasting it he will remember how it tasted yuck and hopefully not do it. I think you can get stuff from the chemist that wont harm him if it goes into his mouth, if you don't have anything from home to use.
