expect at LEAST one every two hours- you should change before or after each feeding, and then there are explosions........ It's always different!
When I packed a diaper bag, though, I would always pack one for every hour I would be out, and then an extra just in case. Only once did I go through them all. At church. It was messy.

About 10-12. How many is your newborn using per day? As long as the diapers are wet and you have over 8, he or she should be fine.
