My son is 19 months and says around 25-30 words and a few two word sentences .
Every child is different but if there is concern it doesnt hurt to get your childs speech or hearing checked , he could just be taking his time , some children dont seem to talk and all of a sudden they are talking in full sentences , remember also that girls develop verbally earlier than boys so try not to compare the two .

each child is different. My daughter was saying quite a few words before she was 1. And has just turned 2 and can say anything and talks in sentences.
BUT my nephew who is 18 months old apparently isnt talking very much at all...there is nothing wrong with him at all, he can communicate effectively enough and just hasnt started talking yet :)
i work in daycare and all kids are different. And range from an 18 month old who knows her colours, speaks like a 4yo..to a 2.5yo who still cannot say more then maybe 10 words. But through skill development activities we hae found that the 2.5yo is not behind in is development and actually excels when it comes to puzzles and stuff :)

I'll never forget my first parent teacher interview for my son at the tender age of 2 and a half, when the teacher told me my son didn't have enough words and maybe we should look at therapy. At the second interview a few months later she told me that she took it all back, and in fact longed for the days when Luciano didn't talk very much!

At 18 months children should be saying around 20 to 30 words for familiar objects, people and events. Their words should be understood 25% of the time. If your 18 month old says less than 10 words, you might want to get a speech therapy consultation. My son is a preemie and is being seen by a developmental consultant so that is what they say here anyway.
My niece also had a speechs therapy assessment and at 21 months she was expected to say 50 words.

My son is 17 months and only says mama and dada and uh huh. If he seems to understand what you're saying i wouldn't worry. According to my MIL my husband didn't start talking till he was almost two, adn then it was words that made no sense but everything only had one name. If you're really worried, ask his doctor at his next checkup.

My little one is 20 months and says mum and hiya. I have a group of friends where all out little ones are the same age, and most can say a couple of words but not much more. Your son sounds perfectly normal for his age, so I wouldnt worry.

That really depends on the child. My 5 year old took a long time to talk properly and, even now, speaks in what seems like a foreign language at times. We know she doesn't have speech problems as we took her to a therapist at 3 years old. Her main problem is talking too fast. Your son is only 19 months old and has plenty of time to establish a vocabulary so I wouldn't worry too much. He'll talk more when he's ready. Good luck.

Every kid is different. My sister didn't start talking until she was 3 and then in full sentences (according to my mom). My 4 kids have all been very different (my girls talked faster and used far more words than my boys did).
Things to look for if you are concerned is does he respond to noises, and understand what you are saying? If so, give him time. But if you really are worried, go see your doctor. Good luck
