It doesn't take diabetes to make a big baby, it just takes sugar. My second baby was over 9lbs but it wasn't until I was pregnant with my 3rd that a doctor finally told me that the baby sees sugar as a growth hormone. Cut out as much sugar as possible and the baby won't be so big.

Hi my first baby weighed 6lbs 11oz and was a long labour overnight was sent home from the hospital the first night labour was slow. (they said 13 hours hard labour) and I had to try everything to give birth to him at the hospital. He took forever and hurt alot. My second baby was 6 lbs 10 oz even though I was alot bigger with her. Her delivery started at 3 am with back labour but I went from 4 cm to having her in 1/2 an hour and it didn't hurt as much. My first baby was 3 days late, my second was 4 days late.

My first one weight 7 lbs, 11 ozs - I delivered at 36 weeks after 5 hours of labor (enduced).
My 2nd weighed 8 lbs, 7 ozs - I delivered at 38 weeks after about 18 hours (enduced).
The first one was definately easier; better doctor and hospital.

my 1st was 2 weeks early, a girl weighed 8lbs 13ozs. Had twins the 2nd time around who came 6 weeks early..boy weighed 7lbs 6ozs girl was 6lbs 13ozs. Both pregnancies were C-section and first was definitely easier with just one baby, lol!

My first baby was 9lb 6oz, was in labor for 20 hours, but pregnancy was easy.

My 2nd was 10lb 10oz, was only in labor 6 hours, heart burn most of the pregnancy, She was born with a full head of long hair.

I thought it was easier the second time around because I had an idea what to expect.

Good Luck!

My 2nd baby was a girl and the labor was hard she did not lay correct her face was upside and the doctor had to help get her out I was for a hour and a half full open, but she did not get out and then he saw it and help me. I was in labor for 5 hours of hell without any pain meds, because when I was at 7cm the sister told me that it is to late to call for meds. But she is healthy and is now 5 months and has already 2 teehts

I only have 1 baby but he was 11 lbs 5 ounces and was 3 days late. My obstetrician said I can expect my next to be as big or bigger, that's just the typical way things happen. I gained 45 lbs. My midwife figured I was having a big baby because I went through a huge growth spurt around 28 weeks - gained 10 lbs in one month. Then it happened again at 7 months. I was tested for gestational diabetes twice but both were negative. He was a healthy, happy baby and honestly, having a big baby is fantastic - they eat well, sleep well, etc.

Good luck!

Quoting Deloris:

I say being relaxed during labor is the best thing for you. The more relaxed you are the faster you dilate. Let your body do what it needs to do to deliver.

I truly agree with Deloris on this point. Before I had my 2nd I read a lot of stuff particularly by an American midwife Ina May Gaskin. She is a bit of a hippy but the birth stories shared by her and others who have delivered at 'The Farm' really talked about how relaxing helped their bodies move through labour more easily. There is also scientific study behind this that shows when you aren't relaxed your whole body tenses up in the fight or flight mode stopping blood flow to your torso and sending it instead to your arms and legs. What this does is make dilation harder as your body is fighting against itself. I tried the strategy Ina May suggested which was to blow through my lips (like blowing a loose raspberry) during each contraction. It helped so much. I went from 2cm to fully dilated in about 2 hrs and at no time did I feel like I needed drugs to ease the pain because it didn't hurt the way it had with my first labour. I don't say this because I think I'm so good, but rather to say how learning more about what happens to my body through labour and what strategies can help worked for me. I truly believe educating ourselves and hearing other positive stories can be so empowering.

Good luck with it all Gemma :)

My second child is a boy and he weighed a whopping 13llbs and 15ounces they nicknamed him Sumo in the hospital because he was so big. I had a schedule C-section with him because of his weight and he was also breached about an hour.

My first child which is a girl weighed 10llbs also C-section and i had 13hrs of labour with that child she was born on the 13th of may (LOL)

all my 5 of my kids were small, the smallest was my first 6lbs. 4 oz. the largest one was 7 lbs. 2 oz. the rest were in between. I delivered the first one in 9 hours, the second in 7 hrs, the 3rd in 5 hours, the 4th in 5 hours and the last one was delivered in 4 hours and 35 minutes. I say being relaxed during labor is the best thing for you. The more relaxed you are the faster you dilate. Let your body do what it needs to do to deliver. Also drinking raspberry leaf tea is great during pregnancy and have a cup when you get settled in. The tea helps your body get ready for delivery. Believe me the tea works.

It's not the weight you have to worry about, it's the size of their head and shoulders...but truly the more they weigh the bigger they are...unless they are long. My 3rd 8'3' was worse than the 4th 9'9', he was off to the side and had a HUGE head. One bit of advice though...go naturally if you can, induction is worse.

My second was much easier and bigger, which I think is pretty much normal. i would say that you had a pretty large baby for being that early so I'd expect an 8 pounder if you go all the way to term! You had a really short labor compared to most people I know so you'd better stay close to the hospital. The second time the labor is usually shorter. My first baby was 8 lb 1 oz and I had 21 hours of labor with her. Yeah, ouch. My second weighed 8 lb. 6 oz and I had about 10 hours of labor total.

My first son was 7lbs 11oz. His labor was so smooth and fast (5 hours). He was three weeks early. My second son, my labor was a little longer, 10 hours, it was a rough ride. He came out finally, naturally, he was 10lbs. 4oz. He was only 4 days late. I thought the second delivery would be easier, but it wasn't. But it was all worth it. I have two beautiful boys.

I have had 3 kids. My 1st Nia ... was born about 1wk late. I ended up having to have a emergency c-section, and she weighed 7lbs 8oz. I gained about 60lbs with her. Almost 5 yrs later I had my second ... Max. He was born around his due date. I gained only 14lbs and was very concerned that something was wrong with him as I had hardly gained any weight. He was born naturally and weighed 9lbs exactly. Absolutely nothing wrong with him at all !! Then almost exactly 2 yrs later I had my 2nd daughter ... Mikaila... by natural delivery. I was induced a wk early because they thought that she may end up being a large baby. They say that your babies usually get bigger the more you have and the doc was scared that she might have been bigger than 9lbs, especially as the doc didn't think that my son was going to be as big as he was. She thought he was going to be about 7 & 1/2lbs. Anyway ... Mikaila was born 7lbs 11oz and a wk later (around her actual due date) she was already 1lb heavier !! So she may actually have ended up being a 9lb + baby too.

Good Luck with yours and try to cherish every moment as best you can.

I was 4 days late with my 1st and I was induced. He was 7 lbs. 11ozs. and 20.5 in. I was only in labor for 7.5 hours. I had an uneventful pregnancy. My 2nd son was a little different. I had kidney stones while I was pregnant and had surgery at 7 months pregnant to remove a stone and they placed a stent to keep my kidney functioning properly. I begged for induction due to the pain I was in. I was induced at 39 wks. I was in labor for 17.5 hours and he was only 6 lbs. 15ozs and 19in. My second pregnancy and labor were much harder. I have a good friend who has 4 kids and each one of her labors were easier than the last. Good luck:)

My second labor was a lot faster and an easier delivery, no time for an epidural since she came so fast and I was glad, I felt sooo much better post delivery vs. having an epidural w/ my first. Good luck!

My frst was 8lbs 10oz, 14 days late, i was induced and had a 33 hour labour. My second weighed 8lbs 14oz, 12 days late he was born at home (planned) and took 5 hours.

My first was a horrific experince i hated being induced as i was in labour for so long but that does not take into account that i went into hospital two days prior to be induced and they kept stop starting me! My second i was sure was not going to be the same so i stuck to my guns and when they tried to get me to go in for an induction i said no. Olver arrived in 5 hours, i had not pain relief other than a tens machine and a birthing pool. With Jessica i had an epidural, ended up in the operating room about to have a c-section but she was actually delivered by forceps. I was cut and ripped badly so it was all in all a pretty horrifc experience although if it meant having my little girl i would do it again without a second thought!

Good luck with yours - they do say on average 2nd babies weigh more and the labour is shorter. x

My first (son) was 2 1/2 weeks early, labor for 18 hours, and was 8 lbs 11 oz. My second (daughter) was 1 week early, labor induced for 10 hours, and was 7 lbs 4 oz. My third (son) was between my two due dates (1 week apart), labor for 11 hours, and was 9 lbs 3 oz. I had my 2nd at 21yrs old and he was 10.12lb. I had to have him c-section because they thought he was going to be 12+ lbs. I believe my original Dr was off with my due date, because as soon as I got a new Dr, they scheduled my emergency c-section. He looked like a little Sumo Baby.. it was great. :) My first I had naturally at 17 and he was 9.2lbs. That hurt. C-section is so much easier. Congrats to you though! Hope all goes well!

With my first (girl) I was 6 months pregnant and looked like I was overdue with twins. She had to be forceably removed (C-section) because inducing at 39 weeks didn't work and my blood pressure had shot up. She wasn't bad 7lbs 9oz 20 inches. With my son I didn't start showing until I was 6 months yet I had an ultrasound technician telling me it was going to be a big baby when I was 34 weeks. Followed by a replacement OB at 36 weeks who measured me and said "My, that's a big baby, you're having a C-section, right?". I asked my OB at 38 weeks, she agreed. He was born a week later. They pulled him out and I said "is there a second one?" He ended up 20 inches also but only 6lbs 13oz and looked even smaller than that. He's still small at 4 months. Where's this big baby they were talking about?

My first was 6lbs 8oz at 38 weeks and 6 days. My second was 5lbs 15oz at 39 weeks and 6 days. My water broke before labor started with my first. I had him 8 hours after that but only felt contractions for 5 hours. With my second, I was in labor for 4 hours total. The 2nd was so much easier than my 1st. It took me 3 hours to go from 6cm to delivering with my first with 12 minutes of pushing. With #2 I went from 6cm to delivering her in 9 minutes and 1 small push to get her out. No epidural with #2 and the doctor didn't even make it in the room.

I am 2nd to youngest and my older brother is 27mths older than I am and we were only 5 oz different but my little brother who is 18mths younger than I am was born 6.5wks premature weighing 6.5lbs had he made it full term he could've been a 9-10 pound baby

Hi my first baby weighed 8lb 10oz and he was born the day after his due date. My second baby weighed 10lb exactly and was induced about a week and a half early. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes with my 2nd pregnancy and it's possible I had it with the first. Having said that my 2nd labour was much much better than my first due to a number of reasons and I was able to deliver my 10lb boy with no pain relieving drugs and no tearing so no stitches. My husband and I went to a course called 'Calmbirth' which really helped me throughout the labour.

I am looking forward to being pregnant again soon :) :) Good luck to you Gemma!
