My son will be 1 at the end of the month. He stopped drinking from a bottle on his own but he is drinking a lot less now. I am using the step 2 formula instead of milk. I was wondering what the recommended daily amount of milk/formula he should drink .

Drinking milk isn't exactly necessary after 1 year, so as long as they are getting lots of water along with calcium and vitamin d from food sources it's fine. My daughter is 14 months and since she was 11 months shes only been having 1 8oz bottle a day.

I also noticed a definite decline in the amount of fluid my son was drinking while we were transitioning from formula/breast milk to cow's milk. I was paranoid & nervous, & after a week or 2 he seemed to be drinking a lot more. It was weird for me b/c he'd have a few sips from a sippy cup & then not want anymore, but if I offered a bottle he'd down the whole thing. It could also be a bottle transition thing. (btw, we did switch to sippy cup before switching to milk, & all seemed fine, once milk went in the sippy, he started to refuse it). Be patient, it only took us a week or 2 to transition him. Babies are notoriously resistant to change. & as for the baby/mama cow thing, don't we also "kick" our babies off the breast after a certain amount of time?

The current recommendations are for infants to be breast fed until at least one year or longer if possible, if breastfeeding is not possible for some reason then as long as your child is thriving he/she can be switched to 3% cow's milk at about 10 months provided that his/her diet is well rounded otherwise. There is no need for a child to be on an infant formula after 1 year of age. The follow-up and transition formulas are merely a marketing scheme on behalf of the companies to get you to continue to buy the formula. As for the previous posting I would check where you get your information from. I would be curious to see the studies cited in the article that are not referenced and assess the validity of such studies.

None. At least cow milk. It is for calves and even the mama cow kicks them away after a certain time. Read this and educate yourself: http://www.mercola.com/article/milk/no_m... or the book "Don't Drink Your Milk" by Oski.

our pedi said 24 oz of cow's milk per day, & while I was still nursing 2x per day he said 16 oz would be about right. I basically just give him milk when he's thirsty & don't stress about measuring. He's pretty good at asking for it & he's not quite 15 mos old.

I just asked the nutritionist this at my 18 month olds last visit concerned about her hieght wieght ratio (over) she said 2-3 6 oz cups is about right. Formula isn't neccessary after a year but if he's like my 18 month old you may have to transition slowly i had to start out mixing half milk half formula and increasing milk in encrements daily. then started weaning off bottle by offering only water in bottle and milk in a cup.
