I dont know if $160 is enough for my cleaning girl (lady)? Five bedroom house (minus one room that we store stuff). Two kids ages 4 and 8. She comes one day every two weeks from 7:45 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. She does 5 to 6 loads laundry. Changes sheets for 4 beds. Plus all the regular cleaning stuff. She is wonderful. I buy her lunch and take her to the bus depot (not stop) and thats all I do for her. My husband thinks we pay too much. I think she is worth at least $200. What do you think? Just wondering.

I worked as a cleaning lady for a summer after high school. The company charged $17/hr and that was several years ago. We didn't get lunch and we had to drive there. We only cleaned when clients weren't home.
So, I would say $20/hr is fair.

You should check for rates in your area/city. I did clean once in another city, for a grand total of $8 or $10 per hour. I worked for an agency as something else...and they stuck me on cleaning shifts every now and then when they were low on cleaners. The company probably got much mroe then 8 or 10 an hour.

Weird thing about that; they used me because a legally blind woman said I was a great cleaner. o.O I wasn't hired as a cleaner; but I sure got lots of cleaning shifts after that.

Now where I live; the average pay-rate for cleaners is more around $10-15 per hour.

Your area may pay cleaners more; or they may pay less then all the rates being tossed around.

Edit: Sorry; the 8 or 10 bucks an hour was in a different city. the city i live in now; seems the rate is more like 10-15 if you pay the cleaner directly. If yoru paying an agency..it could be the same or more.

But agencies keep about half the money before they pay the girls who go in! They have to overhead. This person has no overhead.

Shannin, it makes me sad to hear you speak like that about yourself. Is this what he thinks, or is it just you? Your worth and value can't be masured in money.

Thanks Jennifer. And thank you all for your input. She came today. I paid her $160. She was here from 7:45 until 4:00 p.m. but we had a long chat. She is like family and was having some troubles of her own. I tried to give her another 20.00 at the bus depot but she wouldnt take it. I love her. Thanks again everyone. {:+)

I guess because they work full days at the one location for one employer .

$40 for a regular seems insane to me .....I should join that agency LOL.

OMG Are you serious, Loureen? Only $22-25/hr? That's so wrong considering agencies like Absolute Domestics charges the client $40/hr and all they do is general cleaning (vacuum, dust, sweep and mop).

Have you talked to your cleaning lady to see if she thinks it's fair? She's been with you long enough, she should feel like part of the family almost. :-) You could always ask her if she feels she's getting a fair wage and explain that you wished you could do more for her but aren't able to given your financial circumstances. More than likely you'll find that she is happy with what she is getting and maybe even happy to help you out.

Is that $160/month? If so, then you're paying her approximately $10/hr (8hrs a day X 2 days per month). but if she's happy with the situation, there's no need to change it.

@ JuLeah, In all fairness, he does do everything and I mean everything. I am nothing but a complete drain on him. I am disabled mentally and physically . . . and emotionally. He is a great guy and I would give away the store. I like to make people happy. {:+)

You keep talking about your husbands money. Are you two a team? Are your partners? If so, it is your money. You are home with the kids? I figured it out once, I don't recall the numbers now, but added up, even with min wage, what I would make if given a pay check for all I did around the house ... cooking, shopping, child care, cleaning, medic, tutor, taxi driver, play date supervisior, counslor, home decorator, plant doctor, landscape designer, gardner .... on and on ... I made far more then my (now ex)

I totally agree. I love her. She works darn hard. I know I dont and cant do it. But I dont work or I would give it to her. Now I feel bad. :( She has been with me for four years. She did come once a week and we had to cut her back and we (I) paid her $200 but had to cut that back. But she still comes back. I love her. Thanks for your input {:+)

It is between you and her, but often such folks are under paid, as are baby sitters, teachers, day care providers, folks that care for the elderly .... people that don't or have never had such a job think their cleaning women gets too much, anyone who has changed a sheet knows she is not getting enough.

If this helps; my mom use to charge $20 to $22/hour when she worked as a cleaner.

Hi Karli,
I am disabled so I cant do much cleaning and my husband brings in the money so I dont really have a say in that either. We would both miss her very much. Thanks for your input. {:+)

Hello, her wage works out to be $20/hr. I think a more important question is How badly would you miss her if she did not come to your house to clean? If you rely on her to give you that help and it isn't a strain on the budget than I think $160 is fair for a large house.
