Both of my boys love video games. I allow 2 hrs but no more than 2 and half hrs total, daily. Reading and music and family r just as important in the daily dynamics of the household.

I know he gets really really cross with his brother, he's only playing super mario, its not as if its some violent game, although when I have a go on Mario Kart I get very cross too lol

We have the same problem.  My son too became a monster and lost interest in the painting and drawing and all of that fun stuff.  I think the time limits you have chosen are good....we allow more just becasue it is winter time and he is home during the day but we do limit it to 30 minute intervals.  But I have started daily craft projects just to keep him on track with the basics as well.  Not just allowing him to do what he wants and when he is doing the projects he loves it, but it is not just the first thing he thinks of doing he goes right to wanting video games.  We are adding more structure and it seems to be helping. Still cant figure out why they turn into little tyrants though!!

Well my 6 year old got a ds for xmas, and when he was back at school we allowed him 1 hour a night, it turned him into a monster so now he's only allowed to play it for 1 hour on a friday and at the weekend (obviously limited), I feel really guilty, but before he got it, he only wanted to draw and make stuff, now he's not interested, so we needed to get back down to basic lol
