My son is now 6 months old and we are just starting to introduce rice and spoon feed him. How often do you spoon feed your little ones? Should I replace one of his bottles with the cereal, or add it in addition to his bottle?

Never. Our six month olds (four of them!) start self-feeding (using their hands) on table foods at six months, and eat meals with the rest of the family. Pureed foods are not necessary (and messy), and it's soooo much easier just to give them whatever we're eating. No-brainer, actually! :)

Vicki, got it right. My daughter is 6 months. We have a fruit/or rice cereal in the morning. And then a veggie for lunch. She gets an upset stomach if I feed her later at night. NEVER replace solids for a bottle. Your baby should be eating solids in addition to a bottle. Good luck!

My six month old is eating three meals a day . . . fruit and cereal for breakfast, veggies and fruit for lunch and veggie and cereal for dinner, but we've been working on solids for about a month or so. At first, it was just cereal once a day, and we slowly worked up to twice a day and then added veggies and fruit and worked up to three meals. He still breast feeds as much and as often as he wants.

Just start off with a little bit the first day, and work your way up from there. He'll let you know when he's full, because he'll turn his head away and clamp his mouth shut. If you start with just a little bit, you can watch for allergies or constipation, which sometimes happens with solids. You want to try not to replace too much of his formula though, solids are more of a supplement to the nutrition he gets from formula. We started with just once a day - as he got used to it, we slowly added more between his milk feedings. Now (at 9 1/2 months) he pretty much has meals when we do, and gets some snacks in between.

You should be introducing solids in addition to the bottle. :)
My son is six months also, and LOVES his rice cereal in the morning. We've just started having veggies for dinner also, so he is having two "meals" a day.

Your baby is ADORABLE! Replace 1 bottle with baby food and see how he does. The thing you want to watch for is allergies so be consistant and feed him the same food a couple of times. Once he's mastered that, you can feed him 2xs but the baby should have at least 24-32oz of formula per day.

I feed my 6 month old 4 times a day (he's a pig!). He's got the hang of it, sometimes he tries to feed himself! Solid food isn't meant to replace breastmilk or formula, it's meant to get them used to different tastes and textures and teach them how to chew and swallow, so don't replace any of his bottles. Breastmilk or formula should be the main source of his nutrition till he's at least a year old.
