My darling 3 year old decided it would be really fun t create his very own Picasso style masterpiece with nail polish on mommy's carpet last weekend. Bu time I saw it, it was already dried up. Resolve won't budge it. Tried nail polish remover and all it did was make the room stink worse! Someone said paint thinner might work but wouldn't that eat the carpet fibers? Help?

My little sweetheart decided to paint his grandmothers slippers & the brand new carpet with my bright pink polish once. You will need a large bottle of acetone (its polish remover but much stronger than the regular kind;walmart,cvs has it). Although the polish was fairly dry, once I poured it on the carpet, scrubbed it with a hard srub brush, then used my carpet cleaner to immediately go over the spot it came up pretty well. I repeated these steps numerous times until there was just a tint of pink in some spots. I had light carpet & added a little bleach to the mixture as well,which I did most times when I cleaned my carpet anyway. There were few stands that had hard polish that wouldn't come out so I cut those strands of carpet out(don't chop at the carpet,separate the unstained pieces & just cut the single strands). Even though you could barely see the pink hue, I slid my dining room table over it anyway.

Hey,
Since the rug may have to be cut out...try nail polish remover first....then the magic eraser...that sucker is amazing..I have gotten tar out of a rug...blood and wine....good luck....

If you can't get it out, you can always get someone to cut that piece out and stick another piece in it's place. My fiance used to lay carpet and says it's pretty easy to do. You have to buy the carpet and pay someone to install it, but no more stain =]
I just read that your son has ruined other spots on the carpet, not just this one...maybe it's time to think about a different type of flooring that won't get as noticeably damaged....lol...kids!

well its like right next to my bed anyone so its not like my guests or anything really see it. You're totally right though. We just bought this house in May of 2009 and within 2 months he had trashed the carpet in the dining room! lol! I just gave up on trying to spot treat every night. : ) There are more important ways for me to spend my time and energy. Like enjoying him before he gets all grown up!

Rachel, when it all comes down to it, by the time your kids are grown up enough, your carpet will be totally ruined anyway, LOL :) Mine is - I'm just putting up with it for a while until the kids are a little older - there is no point replacing it now. I have never understood anyone who goes out and replaces their carpet (especially those who buy the expensive stuff) while their kids are still young........

I suppose these types of things come with the territory eh? I remember this being very similar to when my sister and I painted the carpet with nail polish on Christmas day. Guess I'm getting my payback! : )

I remember when I was painting my lounge once, and my 3 year old son dumped the entire 8 litre can of paint on the carpet........
Let's just say that while I cleaned it up as best I could, I went and bought a beautiful rug and no-one was any the wiser unless I told them the story :) So worst case, if these suggestions don't work, find a good rug shop.

If someone you know orders from Melaleuca.com, ask them for their Sol-U-Mel and dab it on the carpet full-strength. It WILL get the nail polish out. Wet it down with a little water and rub, rub, rub. Good luck!

I do have some goo gone. I can try that and see. The carpet is short pile so I can't really shave or cut it out. And the spot is huge! He dumped a whole bottle on the carpet.

Try "Goo Gone" if it can take out gum it should hopefully remove nail polish. It won't ruin the carpet.

Try cutting the worst of it off, or use an old disposable razor to shave it (sounds drastic, but the carpets ruined anyway huh?). Don't know what solvent would work best - you could try to make contact with the nail varnish manufacturers, who should be able to tell you what to use. They'll need to know what the carpet is made from (nylon, wool, or a mixture for example).
