When my son was born, he had Unilateral incomplete cleft lip. The nurse took him away from me soon after for further examination and i don't make early initiation breastfeeding. Later i come home, i breastpumping and feeding him with a bottle. Now the problem come up, i got sick and had to drink the medicine. My milk pretty much dried up after that. Then i started to figure it out, at first i was trying to breastfeeding him, it was so hard, first because my nipple is to short and second i bet he had nipple confusing. Then i tried to get breast pumping again but the result was not quiet good.. it only about 5ml - 20ml for an hour and then it stopped.

My son is 7 weeks old by now and i forced to give him formula. But i'm still hoping that i can breastfeeding him or back to breast pumping again.

So, what should i do to increase the milk supply for my breast? somebody help me..

It can be more difficult for a baby with a cleft lip to latch and form a suction. Often holding the skin around the areola to plug the cleft can help.

Since your baby has special needs and it sounds like there are quite a few factors that are causing challenges here it probably would do you both a great deal of good to get in touch with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.

In the mean time, renting a hospital grade pump is your best bet to maintaining adequate milk production. Your local hospital should have one or be able to point you in the right direction.

It is important that you pump at least every three hours and even once or twice during the night to build and maintain your production.

Congrats on your baby. I know you're stressing!! I have a son that was born with a incomplete unilateral cleft lip and palate. I only pumped for 3 mths though because my hubby thought I was doing to much (I have other kids, house work, and homework) Pumping was taking a lot of my time. It was like feeding twins!! Anyways, yes you can go to the doctor and get some pills to help increase your milk production. Also, if you have the time, try to pump as often as you can every 2hrs or more to initially get it up. I heard that there is a special way to breastfeed, if he only has a cleft lip, talk to a lactation speciallist (or your health nurse). Good luck.

Combination of things might help. I didn't have supply issues, but have heard of supplements that can help (someone else may know/remember what they are). Add to that, having your son nurse off of your breasts before giving a bottle will help get your supply up. Nipple shields will help both with your short nipples and the nipple confusion. Also, keep pumping. Breast milk is supply and demand. The more demand you can make, the more milk you will produce. Good luck.
