I am the mom of a very busy 18 month old son. I am trying to teach him to hold my hand when we walk in parking lots and what not, but find that most of the time I end up carrying him-- either out of fear of him running away or because it is faster. I realize that I will not be able to do this forever, and I am strongly opposed to the idea of a "kiddy leash/safety harness" thing, does any one have tips for teaching him to hold my hand when we walk???

i would suggest getting him used to it in safe, uncrowded places before i would try a parking lot. there's too much potential for things to go wrong if he's not a good hand holder. remember that all it takes is one second of an impulse where your mind was somewhere else and he could get seriously hurt in a parking lot.

also make it seem like a big-boy thing, not a punishment. tell him you'll take the privilege of walking like a big kid away if he doesn't hold your hand. that works wonders for my 17 month old daughter since she loves her freedom and doesn't enjoy being carried.

It all comes in time. Dont carry him because its faster. Hold his hand if he tries to pull away stop right where you are with him. Teach him to stop and look at the same time. When you get him out of the car tell him now we have to stop and look for cars
