I am 38 weeks and 3 days pregnant and have started itching all over my body and not really sure why. Has anyone else ever had this problem and is it normal?

Definitely get tested for Cholestasis if you're 38 weeks pregnant and itching all over. I had this in my third trimester - it was not just stretching in the tummy area, it was head to toe! And unbearable. I don't want to alarm you, but if untreated, it can lead to stillbirth. If you have it, it is easily remedied with medication. It doesn't eliminate the itching entirely, but it is a little better, and most importantly, it could save your baby.

You might have something called pregnancy cholestasis: i am attaching a link for info, but you SHOULD definitely ask your physician to run some liver function tests since you're 38 weeks pregnant and itching all over!

Good luck, Jenn

I heard of someone this summer having this she was itchy and she ended up delivering early. Baby was in ICU for awhile. I would try Zrytec to see if that helps, otherwise see your doctor.

Ask you doctor. I also used a lotion by Cruel called Pregnancy and Motherhood that was awsome. It helped with the strech marks and everything. You can but it at Wal-Mart or Target like places. I started itching at 30 weeks and my doctor recommened this lotion. If you have a rash with the itching it might be TUCKS(?). I had this and we had to do a c-section about 2 weeks early. Just ask your doctor if it really bothers you.

My whole body was itchy during my second trimester, I took zyrtec and used aveeno baths and lotion. Then it just went away one day, I was glad because I thought I was going to have it the whole preg... You should definatley mention it to your doc though as it can be a problem with you billirubin levels I think!?? The doc told me it was too early in my preg for this. Good Luck!! At least you are almost done!

I used vitamin E oil, and it helped ease the itching, and did not get any stretch marks either!!

use plenty of body cream, drink lots of water, and do mention it to the midwife. It could just be dry skin.

It could be your hormone levels but it could also have to do with your liver enzymes. I would say call your dr and get a blood test done to check your liver out. There is a condition in pregnant women and I believe it is called "Coleycystitis". They will do a blood test to see and if it is that they will start you on meds and watch you closely.

It could be PUPS this weird all over skin rash. I had it too. If you see your OB they can prescribe an ointment that will relieve the itching. An oatmeal bath is also good. Definetly see an OB, mine did a blood test to make sure it was not a symptom of any more serious condition.

Good luck!

I itched when I was pregnant both times I could not take the multi vitamin the doctor prescribed because my body did not need a vitamin that it was giving me so it had to try to get rid of it through my skin. This happened both times. I also went to a feed store and bought Udder cream for cows and rubbed it all over my body every day till this day I have no stretch marks works great and smells great also Hope this helps.

Yes, I did that at about the same stage & it was awful! I'd scratch my ankles 'til they'd bleed. The dr. said it's normal for some people & that she'd give me something for it after I gave birth, but as soon as the baby was born it stopped. :-) Toss a handful of oatmeal into your bath & soak for a bit - that sometimes helps.

I'm a Mom of 5 and had this experience during my last pregnancy. I had a high risk pregnancy and was prescribed benadryl by my doctor. I itched thoughout the day and especially at night. I would wake in the morning red all over from scratching. The aveeno bath helps as well.

Not sure if it's already been mentioned here but a friend of mine had
"intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy"
during the last 7 weeks of her pregnancy. It caused her massive itching. It can be a serious condition so you should call your doctor to discuss your risk of it. My friend said she also got info at:

www.itchymoms.com

Hope this helps.

I know a lot of people are saying they had the same and there is nothing to worry about but I would say ring your midwife as it can be a problem with you liver. If you have been itching for a few days I would say have it checked out. It can't hurt to be check better safe than sorry

I started itching at about 28 weeks. Started on my stomach around my stretch marks. It made them swell up like whelps and turn a dark red. Doc said it was PUPPS as mentioned before. I tried benadryl (no luck), he prescribed me a steroid in the form of an ointment. It helped but took a few days. My husband got me some lotion that had menthol in it and made my skin feel really cold. It worked wonders! I had to take cold showers and oatmeal baths to soothe it. Good luck and good thing your pregnancy is almost over. It will more than likely stop when you have the baby.

yep, same thing here...fluid content in your body increases and your skin has to accomodate it. use pure coconut or macadamia nut oil, or cocoa butter all over before you towel off after your shower.

I also had this near the end of my pregnancy with my 2nd child. The itching was horrible in my hands and feet mostly. I ended up having my baby early, through induction. Through a blood test, I found out I had cholestasis, where the liver does allow the bile to flow through correctly. You need to tell your Dr. and make sure he tests you for this. The worst that can happen is a still born birth, but that is the worst. Don't freak out but do make sure he tests you.

I had PUPPS the last four weeks of my pregnancy. I would scratch until I would literally bleed. Aveeno Oatmeal lotion was the ONLY thing that would give me even minimal relief. I honestly thought I would go INSANE from the itching, but I didn't and the end result was SOO worth the discomfort!! Good luck to you!!!

I didn't have that PUPPS thing, but in the beginning of my pregnancy I had pityrisis rosea, a type of viral rash.  Aveeno Oatmeal lotion and bath saved me! I also loved the Kiehls body lotion, it helped, as well.

I didn't have the ichy skin problem wih pregnancy but I did have a problem with my whole body being itchy . Luckly it was nothing, but my dr. was concerneed about my liver. If I were you I'd alk his over with your dr.. There are alot of different things that can be causing this, and no question is to small, or stupid for your dr, exspeacially when it comes to the saftey of you and your baby. I hope all turns out well.

I had PUPPS at the end of my pregnancy, it was ITCHY like I never knew itchy existed!!!!! Basically, in the late stages of pregnancy your liver can get overloaded and dumps toxins into your skin. Yuck, as if it isn't bad enough! Try a collodial oat bath powder and a hot soak! Hope you baby arrives soon!

Do you have a rash?  I had pupps as well for the last month of my pregnancy.  its like poison ivy times a million worst thing i ever went through.  nothing at all helped.  Don't take hot showers it feels good when you take it but after is excruciating!  The rash is usually on the stretch marks i could only get to sleep for like an hour a night i ended up calling my doctor like everyday for the last two weeks crying it was so bad and they induced me a week early because the only way to get rid of it is once you have the baby.  I hope you feel better!!

Try baby diaper cream- the zinc in it should help. The other thing that also is great for keeping the moisture in- so your skin doen't get dry or itchy, and helping with healing scars is Virgin coconut oil, but the best thing about it -is it makes your skin as soft as a new born baby. I still use these things- since my hormones changed after my kids were born- especially pigmentation.

I had this happen with both of my pregnancies.  I tried everything lotions, creams, baths, scrubs etc. and nothing made it better until delivery.  I asked the drs they didn't know what to tell me.  I personally think it had something to do with hormones.  The reason I think this was it started to get better and then I tried the pill and it came right back.  As soon as I went off of it-I got better.  Wish I could offer some better advice for you!  Hope you feel better...

YES!, I too had itchy skin. I used the Aveeno lotion with oatmeal in it, and that helped. Make sure you mention it to your doctor, because the itching can be a sign of liver issues, or pre-eclampsia as well. Best of luck to you. Not much longer to go!!

I had that terribly.. Do you take anything with acetephetamine? (pain reliever in Tylenol).
Your liver is causing the itching.. you will find that if you take any kind of pain relievers this is what's causing your itching due to your liver not able to break down the acetephetamine..therefore flowing in your bloodstream causing all over itching..But yes, I had that too and there is no relief, even if you stop taking the meds it takes a few days for it to go away.. it could be your skin streching.. but mine wasn't, mine was internal itching.. I didn't get strech marks at all..

[deleted account]

I just saw a show about this on TLC I forgot what its called but it has something to do with your liver (if you are itching from head to toe because its normal to have some itching from time to time but not from head to toe and all the time) so please ask your dr about this asap. I know that the minute you deliver it will go away but it is a pain while you are pregnant.

Good Luck,

My sister in law itched all over pretty badly during her second and third trimesters- she was diagnosed with Cholestasis. I think the only cure is delivery, so maybe call your doctor, ask for a test and see what's going on. I know there is a website about it called www.itchymoms.com
