I am 38 weeks and 3 days pregnant and have started itching all over my body and not really sure why. Has anyone else ever had this problem and is it normal?

My sister in law itched all over pretty badly during her second and third trimesters- she was diagnosed with Cholestasis. I think the only cure is delivery, so maybe call your doctor, ask for a test and see what's going on. I know there is a website about it called www.itchymoms.com

Do you have a rash? My sister-in-law did and it ended up being a reaction related to the fact that she was having a boy!! (there is a name for it, but I don't remember it!) She just got a steroid cream from her Dr.

Yes and it is a hormonal thing. Just keep adding the coco butter and try to rest as much as possible.

This could be Pruritic Urticarial Papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPP). I can start as early as 35 weeks but can occur later. It mainly will start around the belly then the tops of the thighs but can occur elsewhere. You need to talk to your OB and let them see it. Reference to ACOG, for more information. Some simple blood tests rule out other major causes of the itching.

I was crazy itchy with both my pregnancies! When I spoke to my doctor he told me it was totally normal and because of all the extra blood flow to my stomach area it would cause itching.
Any sort of creme, and lots of it, wherever you are itchy, works awesome! Good luck!

YES HUN, I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, MY STOMACH EVEN FLARED UP REALLY BAD BUT YOUR BODY IS PROBABLY TEMPORARILY SENSITIVE TO DIFFERENT PRODUCTS. IT'S BEST THAT YOU USE UNSCENTED PRODUCTS PREFERBLY AVEENO AND OR JUST PLAIN VASELINE NOT EVEN THE BABY POWDER SCENTED ONE, NO COACOA BUTTER EITHER AND YOU WILL BE FINE YOU JUST CAN'T USE THE THINGS THAT PREVENT STRECTH MARKS.

It could be a condition called PUPS. You have elevated liver enzymes causing bile salts to build up causing itching. Check with your provider for lab work and BP check. The cure is delivery, and at 38 3/7 weeks, you are safe.

My last pregnancy ... I was told hormones caused it and to use Hibicleanse sp? it's usually in the first aide department it's a very gentle antibacterial liquid soap it helped along with extra moisturizers Aveeno is a good one.

If its a rash it may be PUPPPS i know i got that all over my breast in the first trimester weird huh? But its from all the hormones and skin strecthing. My belly itched the last 2 mnths but be careful not to scratch it creates stretch marks;]

at the end of my pregnancy I got a rash that is common with pregnancy called PUPPPS, if it's that then you'll also get red splotches all over too and nothing really will get rid of the itching. they gave me a topical steriod cream that helped for a little bit

My body did itch everywhere right before I delivered and then all the way into the 5 weeks after. My doctor told me it was hormonal, and I used Aveeno Oatmeal body wash and lotion. The baby can also snuggle with you after you use them, because they have no harsh perfumes or dyes. Very nice oatmeal bathes too, if that is your cup of tea. Good luck and best wishes!

super normal. Your skin is stretching and you lose a lot of moisture in your skin during pregnancy which causes it to be extremely dry and easily irritated. I used palmers cocoa butter religiously three times a day with both of my pregnancies and it really helps. It also prevents stretch marks. I had twins with my second pregnancy and I do not have any stretch marks anywhere.

I was very itchy all over my body when I was pregnant with our fist child. Turned out I had a alergy to chocolate! After a few months it got better, then after the baby it was gone completly, and I have not had any signs or itch since! Must have had something to do with hormones...

I had severe itching and it turned out it was cholestasis of pregnancy which is very serious. See your doctor and make sure they test for it immediately. They will probably take the baby because the longer the baby stays, the worse it can get.

Yes. I did it with all four of my pregnancies. It has something to do with the skin getting tighter and drying out. Sometimes a really good lotion with aloe or cocoa butter will help.

The same thing happened to me! My doctor wasn't very helpful. ( I was seeing a midwife at an Army Hospital) She just referred me to a dermatologist - which I never went to see because by the time I got the appt. the symptoms were gone. All I can tell you is that hopefully it will pass but I guess it's a normal thing that some women go through.

YES! Your body will do things it never has before...just like when you crave a food you never liked before. FIRST talk to your Doctor...just to be safe and make sure all is ok. Then get a good lotion with cocoa butter in it and use it liberally. Should help...every pregnancy is different.

I itched throughout my pregnancy, tried to pin point why and what could be causing it. After several months I realized it was the Iron pills the Dr. prescribed me. I suffered for so long and when I stopped taking them I immediately had instant relief!!

I itched horribly during my last 4 weeks. my doctor said it was perfectly normal. She said it was a combination of the hormons, increase in blood volume, and skin stretching. Even after I delivered i was still itching for a couple of days!!

You might have pups its a rare condition that most pregnant women get, I got it when I was pregnant and no matter what you put on it wont go away till your little one is born. There still isnt a reason to why this happens but they do know it happens to most women carying a boy, the good news is as soon as your baby comes out the itching does stop.

I had PUPPS at the end of my pregnancy, it was ITCHY like I never knew itchy existed!!!!! Basically, in the late stages of pregnancy your liver can get overloaded and dumps toxins into your skin. Yuck, as if it isn't bad enough! Try a collodial oat bath powder and a hot soak! Hope you baby arrives soon!

yes, i had the exact same thing at 38 weeks, but mostly hands and feet. My midwife tested my blood and I had a condition called colistasis. This is a liver issue, I would talk to your doc and make sure that this isn't what you have. I was planning a home birth and we had to deliver in the hospital instead. Everything was fine and I had a natural water birth and a perfect baby, but it made my pregnancy too high risk for a home birth. Hope I didn't scare you, i am sure you are fine, but definately ask your doc. Good luck

ALthough its probably just skin stretching, this could also be a serious condition, go to your healthcare provider immediately. Better to put your mind at rest.

First pregnancy? Itching is normal, your skin is stretching. Lotion with aloe helps to soften your skin and stop the itch. :0) I also had a red rash across my belly and around both sides throughout both my pregnancies. Check with your OB Dr. to be sure it is normal for you. Every pregnancy is different!

actually my mom tells me that when she was pregnant with me, that she seemed to be "allergic" to her own body... the hormone levels were actually what her skin reacted to, but it was the same basic thing. Everything itched. She said that the only thing that seemed to help her was taking nice long baths, soaking in like a milkbath... Hope this helps...

Hello Mandi, try Neutrogena soaps and oils; it's a very good product when used when bathing. Aveeno Oatmeal baths are excellant. Drink lots of water and stay away from the shower.

I did and I also broke out into a rash. It is something that pregnant women do. My doctor told me that if it became unbearable to take benygel (sp) and it helped. But they told me not use the cream and the pills at the same time b/c that would be to much for the baby. But check with your doctor to make sure that it i okay for you to take.

Definitely get tested for Cholestasis if you're 38 weeks pregnant and itching all over. I had this in my third trimester - it was not just stretching in the tummy area, it was head to toe! And unbearable. I don't want to alarm you, but if untreated, it can lead to stillbirth. If you have it, it is easily remedied with medication. It doesn't eliminate the itching entirely, but it is a little better, and most importantly, it could save your baby.

You might have something called pregnancy cholestasis: i am attaching a link for info, but you SHOULD definitely ask your physician to run some liver function tests since you're 38 weeks pregnant and itching all over!
Good luck, Jenn
