dont buy laces - get velcro!!! as a teacher i would much rather this - it is a nightmare when you have to tie 20 laces after sports

I can not even believe you would suggest this as an educator!!!  I have had enough of our school system dumbing down our kids because it's just to hard for them...Well guess what it's not about you it's about the kids yes you do your job for pennys but guess what if you don't want to teach the children to survive in this world then find a new job...It's teachers like you that just irritate the hell out of me.  Because it's what you prefer NO IT"S WHAT IS BEST FOR THE KIDS!!!!  Gee maybe you shouls take a minute and teach them how to do it them selves...

Erm, while I do agree with Shelly that just dodging the problem rather than fixing it won't help...I dunno if I would have phrased it quite like that. Anyway, I think a good way to teach him to tie his shoes is to let him tie some shoes! Show him how to do it (the rhyme is a good idea) and physically help him tie the laces so he can develop muscle memory. Also, the idea of having an older child teach him is AWESOME. Kids love teaching each other how to do things and the ones learning think it's so cool that they can do what the big kids can do.

I was having a hard time teaching my daughter to tie her shoes.  I was using the bunny method.  I told one of her friends mother when I was picking her up one day and her mother suggested that I have her friend help her.  So I had her friend teach her (who was also 6) and she got it.  The mother said that she always had an older child teach the younger child (she had 4 kids) and they accepted the lessons much easier than when she tried to teach them anything.  Don't really know why it worked, but it did.

I have had a lot of parents tell me their kids did really well with the Spongebob shoe tying song over and over. My younger son learned but the middle one refused. We stick with Velcro for school shoes, just because of what the teacher said in this post. After Christmas break in Kindergarten, kids are expected to tie their own shoes. This baseball season, I am determined they will all get it, I can't keep getting eveyone out the door when I have to stop and tie their cleats for them.

I taught my daughter to tie by sitting her on my lap and putting a long shoe string around my leg. She was tying by the end of the afternoon! Hope this helps!

Our oldest learned the way we all tie our shoes. Took her a bit too. =) She made a tree (the first loop) a bunny ran 'round the tree, then through the hole and then she pulled on bunny's ear to make a bow. LOL It worked. Though we had to get extra long laces at first because she didn't make them quite as tight as we would but she got it after awhile.

try the bunny ears method.. you stand behind yr child and take both lases bending both in half so the child so the child crosses one ear over the other tucks it under and pulls

Barney...I know it's a little old for a 6 year old and kinda cheesy too but hey, the big purple guy has a way with kids you have to admit! And the shoe tying one...great.

I was taught with the two-loop method. Tell him to make "bunny ears" with his laces - one loop in each hand. And then tie them in a knot. (I think the other way is confusing at first.)
