Yup,done the same thing to my little boy when he was tiny. Bled for ages and I felt awful! He's 27 months now and sits still for me while I do them, and then wants the clippers so he can pretend to do them himself, so obviously no lasting damage!! We've all done it so dont worry, and like Alison said it probably won't be the last time you accidentally hurt your little one.

Go down to the chemist and buy some safety scissors they are not expensive and you will be able to cut her nails when she is awake as it is impossible to cut the skin. My daughter wriggles like mad when I cut her nails and we havent had a mishap yet.

[deleted account]

Tarra I cut my sons thumb. I was cutting the nails while he was sleeping and something made him jump as I was clipping his nail and I got skin instead. The second time was not long after the first. I was so nervous after cutting him the last time my hands were shakey and I cut his other thumb. I felt like such a jerk. But that was a year ago and I am much better at it now as I am not nervous about doing it now too.

@ Haley all I have to say is KARMA

Haley are you serious? That is horrible to be calling her so careless. There are 11 other people on here and I know some on a different thread that have done the same thing. It's very common. Stuff happens, kids get hurt it's really not appropriate to try to make her feel worse than she does. She just asked if it happens to others which it obviously does. I nicked my 2 year old behind the ear last night when I was trimming his hair, does that make me careless too. They are kids they move. Next time she'll know what to expect if she's does it when she's awake. Sheesh, leave the poor girl alone!!

OMG - my husband just did it to my son (N) I cried harder than my baby.. Its aweful and yes it does happen. :"( he iss fine now... He's a tuff boy, he jus turned 3 months today... I told him "no, not when he's awake" I just told him that this morning... and he tried to do it awhile ago. Its his 1st baby, so he's pretty shaken up. I came on here to see what I should do, cuz I was SO careful with my 1st born, I always did it while she was asleep... ♥

It's not your fault. My husband has done it to my son before with the nail clippers. It's an accident.

this has never happened to me but if you no longer feel comfortable with the nail clippers you may want to bite them yourself. i have never used the nail clippers i have found biting my sons nails to be easier

I did the same thing, she was about 3 months old and she woke up halfway through my cutting her nails. I was so upset I started crying, my husband was laughing at me because I was crying more than the baby was. It stopped bleeding, she healed, all was well and now she chews her fingernails so I only have to cut her toenails(and that's hard enough, she;s very ticklish)

Oh my lord I cried more than the baby! thankfully they heal faster than our guilt. I was using baby safe nail clippers and still managed to cut her. My brother in law had to cut her nails after that cause I couldn't face it and he used the most fierce looking nail scissors (that I now use without injury to either child) baby safe pah! no such thing.

Every single mother I know and have ever met has cut their baby's finger while cutting their nails at least once! I have done it too and I know how you feel! :)

oh man, I remember "chopping" at my son's fingers. I was pretending like I was going to eat his fingers which is loved and thought was very amusing till my teeth actually bit his finger, he started crying, I was so upset, I felt so bad that he went from thinking it was so fun to why did mommy hurt me. I cried, I called my husband at work and told him. So although I didn't cut his finger while cutting his nails, I know how bad you feel. Don't worry she will get over it and more then likely before you do.

Don't worry Haley, you'll one day be 'careless' too. And you'll feel just as terrible and guilty as the rest of us mere humans who have accidentally hurt our kids.

Yes I have by the way. I was so upset I threw up and I haven't cut them since, but she is fine now and I know that she doesn't even remember it :o)

@ Louise, is that the only place you can buy those scissors? That's very helpful.

I've done it too. To both of my girls. It was an accident and they do happen.
I would maybe call her doctor and make sure it's normal for it to look like that though. You don't want it to get infected.
Again mistakes happen!!

I did it once, I left the nail cutting to my husband for a long time after that because I felt so bad. It happens to most of us, it was an accident, I know you feel terrible but you will get over it.

[deleted account]

It happens don't stress over it. I could make a list of how many times my kids have gotten accidentally injured in little ways over the years from fingernail clipping to zippers to car seat buckles. They know I love them and its not done on purpose.

I did with my first son when he was a baby, I cried more than he did because I felt so bad for hurting him. Watch her finger for signs of infection. keep it clean. If it looks like it might get infected take her in. Now I will clip a little on the side then tear the rest off. I know you feel bad but it happens.

The sad part is that this is most probably not the last time you will unintentionally hurt your child. The good news is that she will most likely go on to have a happy life despite the finger injury. ;)

Yes I did that once.. now my son (8 months) just sits there and giggles when I file them. I just started by doing a couple at a time and then cheering and praising him after I did a few I then would do a few more a few hours later. Even now every so often he fusses a lil so I stop and the finish later. I cut them in his highchair after he eats when he is happy and content. Dont feel bad it happens

It happens sometimes, and you are not a terrible mom! Relax and take a deep breath. She will be fine!

I did that to my daughter, and she was sleeping. It sure makes a mommy feel bad, but we are human too, and all make mistakes. Just make sure you wash her hand really good with an antibacterial soap and just keep an eye on it the next couple days to make sure the area around it doesn't get really red, and warm, and doesn't have any drainage comming from it. Those are signs of infection and she would need to see the doc. Since it bled for so long, it prob. is ok, because the blood would have washed away most of the bacteria. I don't know how old she is, but if she is really young (my daughter was 3 months) I definately wouldn't recommend a bandaid as she could choke if she sucks on her fingers and it falls off.

I did it too I felt so bad, now I let my husband do it, since I don't even like doing it anymore while she's sleeping.
