My son is starting to want to use the potty. I was given a soft seat insert for the adult seat, and I was thinking of getting the one he can sit on and go to himself.
So My question is WITH BOYS:
did you use the potty chair, or the soft seat insert?
He is just starting to grab himself and pull at his diaper when he needs to go. So I rush him to the potty, and so far we have used #2 the most! I am glad about that! His "reward" is he gets to flush the toilet... Hey whatever works.
Also the potty chair: I saw one at wally world that was a truck, and made noises and stuff. He is REALLY into trucks right now, so I was thinking that someone could get it for him for xmas... but too much distraction you think?

Thanks for you input! and any tips will be nice. He is only 22 months old

A trick that a friend of mine used to teach standing is FruitLoops Cereal!! Let him pick a color, drop it in and tell him to aim in the center!!! It worked for her.... GOOD LUCK!!!!

I plan to use the insert because then they learn to use the actual toilet. I would think simple is better but if you think it'll help him be more excited to do it then great. But don't want to convince him that going potty is a play time thing because toys get old and you don't want him to get bored with it.

Quoting Angie:

My son would sit on the toilet backwards (no special seat/insert) and it seems to work perfectly. He could hold on to the back of the toilet and his little butt was on the smaller, front part of the seat and he would 'aim' in the larger part. Of course it is a good idea to have some lysol wipes handy until they get aiming down, sitting that way makes them lean forward if they try to watch what they are doing and it goes where it should. It was usually just the first burst that could get out of control a bit. Also works well for Number Two.

I have 4 boys as well as have had a daycare for 21 yrs. I put the boys on backwards too. They come near not peeing on the floor. I do wash their hands extra good and make sure why they are sitting there that they don't touch their hands to their face/mouth. They don't feel like they are "falling in" too. I've done it this was with a few girls that were afraid they might fall in. But it does work great for boys.

I had 4 daughters then i was Blessed with a son I did not even think about him standing at first he used the potty the same as the girls did I did noot want to confuse him

every thing fell in to place as he got older He went to the toilet with his dad so it became altomatic for him to stand when he was big enough to do it. Try a ping pong ball in the toilet water and get him to aim for it .

as he grows it will become altomatic for him to stand

Any work as long as they have a pee guard. Dont waste money unless you want to. Teach them sitting down then when they are tall enough to pee standing in front of

the big toilet standing have them go in with an older male, or have them aim for cheerios.

With both my boys they had a potty chair to use. We also had the boys sit on the toilet backwards when not at home. This gives them security they are not going to fall in. My 4 year old just decided it was time to use the potty instead of diapers just in time for his fourth b-day. My husband sits to go to the bathroom most of the time so the boys saw that most. My 4 year old is just now 3 foot so standing is challenging with "comfort height" toilets since his scrotum is right on the toilet bowl. So sitting is the option he uses most. I think standing is more difficult due to the aiming bit.

I got my son a 3-in-1 potty. It's a little potty, you could take out the insert and put that in the toilet and you can later use it as a step-stool. You can get ones with a hard seat, but I got the one with the soft seat. It makes a little more of a mess, since pee can get under the cushion, but it's easy to clean. Also, with the soft seat insert in my son's potty, you can flip it. One side is for girls and one is for boys. It has a little pee-guard on it, so when you flip it one way, the pee-guard is down (for girls) and flip it the other way the pee-guard is up (for boys). Also, it's pretty inexpensive. If I remember correctly it was around $16!!! It's by Safety 1st and you can get them at WalMart, Target and Babies'R'Us. Hope this helped!!!

OH!!! And also, one of my sisters got one that has a few gadgets on it, like a toilet paper holder and all the neat little things.. Her son would rather play with that than go potty. So simpler is probably better so they don't think it's playtime. But you can always bring a book in with them or sing to them. That helps keep them relaxed while they try.

if he's making strides on the toilet why step backwards. you know what happens when they try to pee standing in front of one of those. have you tried the cheerios in the bowl? it gives him something to shoot at when peeing. good aim always deserves a reward.

Well...I guess all I have to say is that I wish they had truck pottys when my boys were potty training! I think separate chairs are easier if you have it in your main bathroom so you don't have to make him hold it while you get the seat ready...Just think how long it feels like it takes to get from the car to the bathroom when you gotta go...That's probably how he feels waiting for you to give him the go-ahead. Another nice thing is that the separate chairs are always there...So it will give him a sense of independence when he can go all by himself.

my son is older now but he started showing interest at the same age. We had the potty chair but found he was more interested in being a big boy and going on the big potty so we never used the potty chair. I would go with the soft seat insert. We didn't have them for him but his potty chair came apart and the top fit on the toilet seat so we just ended up using that.

I used the insert but when my child started preschool they told me it was a bad idea. Children can set on a reg. seat just fine and i was only causing trouble with it went to going at daycare and in the public. I was told to stop using it right away and incurage setting on the reg. seat. It worked much better after getting into the swing of things.

We used the insert and a step stool to get there. It worked great he like it better when he stood to go #1. This is for April about teaching a boy to stand up or sit down. Try sitting down first if it doesn't work then try standing. Throw some cheerios into the toilet and tell him to try and aim. It make them control it better.

You re doing great! Different kids prefer different seats. At that age, the potty chair might be easiest for him. Some do like the noisemaker ones and I have found that they aren't too noisy at all!

I used the Graco Soft Seat Trainer Potty Chair (with all 3 boys). The chair was easy to use and you have a stool to help when you decide to use the insert. (They learned to pee sitting down.) We used "potty treats" every time they peed in the potty. Then changed to giving prizes (mine LOVED the little hotwheel cars) for staying dry until nap time & bedtime, then changed to getting a prize - when staying dry all day. I also let them pick out their own big-boy underwear - which was a very big deal. I never used pull - ups. Mine trained Very easily and quickly too.
Good Luck :)

i bought every type of potty chair that they had at the store. Honestly my son used the one that was very simple and not distracting--it folds up to look like a little step stool and the seat can be taken off and put on a big toilet. He would reach behind him and turn off the potty chair that sang and made all the noise. He learned while sitting on the regular sized potty...i mainly used the toddler one to toss in my trunk when we were going somewhere. He would just sit on the regular toilet and spread his legs out wide (this also seemed to help him see what he was doing and he seemed to aim more downward when sitting this way.

he started standing when he saw his father doing it...i didn't have to do too much teaching him how to stand up, he just seemed to get it. lol.

good luck and don't give up!

I am potty training my 23 month old. And I bought the little potty he can get on himself, but also snaps apart where you can put the lid on the big potty. We haven't had much luck with the little potty. Even when he's sitting on it right, his dinky is still going on top of the bubble. If I put it on the big potty and have him spread his legs, it's under the bubble. It's such a pain to try to get little boys in the right position to actually pee "in" the potty.

I noticed they hide when they do #2 so i had to watch for signs of #2 sit him on the toilet and stay in the bathroom with him and it worked.

We used both. The chair in the bathroom that we used most of the day and the insert for the other. I also had one in the car. I know it sounds gross but when you are on the road and the only option is a nasty gas station restroom that you don''t want to use and there is no way all the TP in the world will cover the seat enough for your child. The one in the car was a blessing. Besides the kids thought it was funny to do #1 & 2 in the car. IF he's into trucks then I would definitely buy the potty seat truck. My kids were into Dora and Diego. What ever works.

Hi Tiffany I used a soft insert for the adult seat with my son but to be honest he is only used it for a few weeks then preferred to sit himself on the normal toilet with out anything. He still uses the potty at times but at least if we are out he will sit on a normal toilet. One of the problems with the inserts is my son often struggled to tuck his willy down enough and we often had wee on the floor which is probably why he didnt use it for long.

I reckon 22 months is the perfect time to toilet train a boy (or a girl). We have waited too long (mine is 39 months). However, we did the 3-day toilet training (google it online) and if you're dedicated enough this is a great method. Standing up to wee is much easier and if he's a bad aim put a ping pong ball in the bowl to aim for - they don't flush. We are having trouble with number twos on the toilet - obviously chocolate freddos are not enough of a reward!

I had both for my kids the big thing is you have to make sure they understand the potty chair is like the bigger one and that it isnt a toy because if it makes noise and everything eles you may find him playing with it instead of using it.

I would think it would be to destracting seeing how you want him to learn to use the potty to potty not play. I am using fruit loops when he start to want to stand and aim to potty, but we have a way to go. Good Luck

You really don't need all the bells and whistles, I posted somewhere else that I taught both my boys to stand and pee, by letting the hit Cheerios. We made a game of it to see if they could sink the rings. Worked both times like a charm.

My son was 3 when he started to use the potty. What works for him is the the potty he can use on the floor!! We also have a soft donut  that we take to do the shopping and to places of that nature. It only took him 2 weeks to get comfortable with using both. I love the idea of flushing the toilet as a reward. We used stickers!!

I think a noisy toilet isn't the best idea right now. To many bells and whistles. What I would do is get a plain toilet and than buy truck stickers and have him decorate it with them! We saw a Mickey Mouse toilet and I was tempted to buy it, but when I noticed my son was more intersted to use it as a "new toy that made lots of noise", we decided against it and bought Mickey stickers instead!

Good luck with it all!!

Hi! i have a 3 year old son. What i did was gave him his own potty chair that made noise when he would use the bathroom in it. He loved it. He would use the bathroom in it because it made noises and he enjoyed it. Not only that but their kids they not tall to reach all the time and you might be busy doing something at that moment when your son needs to go to the potty. He can just go by himself because its his level. My son learn at 2 years old to potty himself because he wanted to. but it was hard to learn how to use the #2 because at first he kept useing it in his underwear until it felt nasty. so he started useing it in the toilet. But once you potty training him don't put the diapers back on him because he is going to think it's okay to use it in his diaper. I hope everything works out okay!

Don't worry about the distraction on the potty chair you are wanting to get for him..If he has something to entertain him for a bit he may sit a little longer..That always helps when they start getting a little stubborn about going once the newness of being a big kid wears off...

It may incourage him to try to use the potty more, but on the other hand, even though he likes trucks it could scare him. Do what ever works for him. Each of my boys were different. Boys are hard. If you do get the childs potty for him, it would make it easier for him to go on his own, without having to find mommy or daddy. Try both, see which he perfers.

Well if he is pulling at his diaper and knows what the feeling is then you are in better shape then most of us with boys that age!LOL

Let him pick out his own potty chair and big boy underwear. Explain to him that he can't pee or poo in his special big boy underwear. Get a piece of bristol board and soem stickers both from the dollar store and give him 1 sticker for peeing 2 for pooping. Then let him flush the toilet and awsh his hands. My sons potty chair can be used as a step stool. Also if you feel he wanted to pee like daddy( not sure if he's present sorry) then allow him to stand liek daddy. My son was peeing all over the place and with another baby and childcare in my home it became hard to train him so i used panty liners and it worked like a charm. Some moms don't like this but it worked for me. They are absorbant enough to catch the pee and not get on the floor but thin enough for him to feel he has peed himself. He did great for a few days then got the runs...ugh! Anyways good luck and let us know how it goes!!

My theory is only train them once...if they start on a little potty, you then have to train them on the big toilet, because it feels so different. I used an insert with all of my kids, boys and girls, and just put a non-slip stool in front of the toilet so they could help get themselves up there, then push it over to wash there hands. Once you have the little guy going all the time, then worry about him standing. Oh, and when it comes to them standing, I had one that just couldnt aim...so i kept a small bowl of fruit loops on the counter...everytime he had to pee we tossed one in the water and he tried to hit it...worked great!
Good luck!

if it makes noise when he pees or goes poop then it will be another incentive to go as it will be an exciting thing for him. Boys are slow to train in the end I had to bribe my son with a toy train to use the toilet all the time as he knew how just couldn't be bothered. You do whatever works each child is different....I highly suggest you encourage him to sit down as it is much cleaner that way little boys have bad aim.....so do some of their fathers lol

We also bought a portable toilet seat for when we're out and about. We tried using just the potty but mommies tummy could handle #2's. lol I tried teaching him with just the toilet seat but 1 it was a little cold and 2 he felt like he was gonna fall in. I'm not gonna worry about teaching him to stand just yet, I don't think he would have the concept of standing still, aiming and peeing... Sitting is just fine for now. Great work so far! My first son is only now potty trained and we started working with him at30 months - he is now 3 yrs and 2mo old. He has been fully trained no accidents for the past 3 months. We use the soft seat insert with a small step stool that he can move around on his own. He sits down to pee even though he can stand and do so when we are out in public restrooms. His daycare provider makes the children sit when they potty so it was best to keep it all the same to avoid confusion for him. I wouldn't spend any money on a chair. The inserts are very easy to clean and your son will use whatever you offer him and whatever he gets use to. Good luck and just know that your instincts are usually right! :)
