I'm new to Circle of Moms and new to Facebook. Any one out there dealing with an almost-empty nest and not liking it?

Hi Michelle,

My daughter is 17, a junior in high school and she is starting to look at colleges. She wants to go to school outside of California (we live in San Diego) and is looking mostly on the east coast. My oldest son is 25 and goes to law school in Wash. DC so he hardly comes home any more and when he does it's only for a couple of weeks. My second son has been out of the country since the end of August and is coming home next week. He'll be here for the summer and then starts law school in Philadelphia in the fall so I'm sure this will be his last summer here. Since my daughter has been the only kid home for the last 5 years and is a great kid, we are very close and I am dreading the day she leaves for college. I'm trying to get myself psychologically ready but I know is will be very hard.

What's you situation?
Pam

Hi Michelle;

My name is Sandi and I am kind of new to Circle of Moms. I am not sure what if my situation is like yours but I have a son that is 31 and has a family, and I have a daughter that is 15 and is almost finished grade 10. We have been discussing what she wants to do when she graduates grade 12.

It may sound silly, but I am already dreading the thought of her leaving home. I think about things like, how will my relationship with my husband change, will we move closer to where she will go to University, just things like that.

The thing that is hard for me is that it took us 15 years after our marriage to concieve her and the thought of her going away to school scares me. The older she becomes, the closer we become. I just am making the time that she is still at home the best, after all we still have a couple of years before she leaves home. I hope that I may have helped you even if in a small way. If you would like to chat at anytime feel free to tap me up.

Hi Michelle,
Our two daughters are nearly 21 and 25. Both have been away at college for 3 years now. Coming home for holidays and summer breaks. This summer our youngest will be home for about a week and then she will go back to San Diego to work in the schools finical aide office. It takes time to get use to the idea of empty nesting. Our oldest is graduating in May and she will end up in what ever city she can find and job.
Although after 18 or so years our lives have been focused on being a mom, there is life after motherhood. You will do fine, there are two other communities, Empty nesters and Moms of college age kids. All three of these communities have moms that are here for you as you adjust.
