I've been a smoker for over 10 years. I've tried several times to quit on my own, i've tried the gum and a few other things with NO success!! Has anyone else quit with success? If so, what's your secret?? I could really use some words of encouragement!

My husband went on Chantix and ended up in the emergency room. When he was released he stayed in bed for three days. He was weak, dizzy, throwing up and had crazy dreams. Some people do well but my husband and our neighbor did not. Then he tried chewing on menthol flavored toothpicks. It sounds crazy but it worked.

my friend used the chantix and it worked wonders for her!

i'm still in an ongoing battle myself, but what seems to be working this time is (and you should know i'm a very eco friendly, herbal suplement taking, vegetarian, reduse reuse recyle girl lol) is thinking about all those little bits of filters making a mess everywhere! then i think about "this pack of smokes had to travel "so far"  and it's carbon footprint is probably huge, etc etc.  i also have a thing about my teeth (fear of loosing them) so i think, what if it's this one smoke that gives me a gum infection and i end up needing all my teeth pulled and wearing dentures before im 30"

lol it seems to be working for me, so my advise is try and relate smoking to something that you really care about...maybe you are walking down the street and want a smoke, but there is a woman walking right behind you.  she could be pregnant, and so you would be causing her to inhale second hand smoke, so her baby could be born with a low birth weight.

lol it's a far fetched senario, but do you get where i'm coming from?

good luck and i hope something works for you!

oh, i also started knitting for when i need to keep my hands busy :)

Hi Erinn, I didn't quit smoking until I was 4 mo. pregnant. I just gradually cut back, and then it hit me one day that I had NO choice, I had to quit for my baby no matter how hard it was. I was a pack a day smoker. I smoked for probably 15 years, it was my best friend. It was very hard, it's all that I thought about. Then it really got easier the longer I was quit.

I just found out today about something new.  I am unsure of all the details but write to granniesattic@earthlink.net and tell Marcie that Leigh Stansbury sent you!!  And she will be able to explain more of this new thing... I hope it all works out well for you and I agree with the other postings...I just did cold turkey after I realized that I was burning up money.  :)  God Bless you on these hard but worth it, steps!

I am not a smoker, but I have seen heavy smokers quit using Champix. And they are going on 2 - 4 years of no smoking. My husband also quit by using hypnosis, counseling, and medication. Just the other day he said, "I can't believe that I used to smoke. It was one of the best things I ever did!" Good luck!

YES!!! CHAMPIX!!!! it does work, there are side effects! but minor, it does make you feel sick when you lit up, and wierd dreams, I was awake afew times a night for about a week(not far from my reg schedule,my daughter(10 mo) still wakes at 2 or 4 am on occasion) but I smoked for about 10 yrs and with the help of champix it gave me will power and I have no desire to lit up even being right infront of my fiance who still smokes, its GREAT!!!!!!!!!

I work as a nurse at a psychiatric hospital that recently went smoke free after the patients having been allowed to smoke for the last 50 or 60 years and we use the commit lozenges there and they really seem to help with the cravings...at medication time everyone (esp new patients) are lined up waiting for them !

I have been a smoker for 40 years. I just got the Chantix and my quit day is April 30. I have heard of its success, even with those who really don't want to quit but feel it is time. For me, it is just time. I am afraid of gaining weight or being irritable, but quitting is the best thing I can do for myself, let alone for my family. I will let you know how it goes.

chantix works great. it makes the ciggarettes taste really bad and it made me gag and want to vomit everytime i lit one. also if you think about how much money you will save that helps too! we figured that we were spending about $300 a month for the 2 of us after that we were done.

My secret is that after 15 years of smoking about 1 1/2 packs a day, I used to think if I don't have a cig I'll just die.  Then I thought "No, if I keep having cigs I will die." I just looked at them as death!  And I prayed for God to take the urge away.  Stopped 7 years ago and feeling great.  Best of luck to you.

My cousins used to smoke. But they started having kids they wanted to stop. So, everytime they wanted to buy cigarettes, they put the money in a jar instead. In a year, they were both done with cigarettes and were able to take a 2-week vacation. How's that for motivation? :)

On the other side of things, my grandfather died from smoking. When a family friend saw everything he went through (2 strokes and 2 heart attacks over 2 years), he quit cold turkey, as he had young kids and didn't want to leave them. Do it for your kids.
