depending on what your job is I have known of people who after they had children instead of working 8hour shifts 5 days a week working 10hour shifts 3x a week this way it is still closer to fulltime and they are able to get all their work done but they get to stay home more days with their children. :) Where do you work?

The best advice I can give is to have a plan. Include an outline of how your responsibilities will be handled. State clearly what you'll be able to accomplish and then suggest how the rest of your other duties will get done. Maybe there are things in your job description that could be shifted to fall under another position? Or ways things could be changed around so that the office could run more efficiently and then you could get everything you needed to get done. Perhaps you can jobshare? Is there another mom in your office who would like to stay home? Basically, you need to sell the fact that you are valuable and that the work will get done. If your position could be streamlined, while still effective, your working part-time might even save the boss money, which would be a great way to introduce the topic!

Do you fear getting 'laid off'' or 'let go' by expressing your desire?  I think it all depends on your job and your boss.  I would simply say that 'due to family pressures and responsibilities, I am opting to work on a part time basis if permissable'.  If it's not permissable, at least you still have a full time job.
